Bottrop offers a variety of reasons to stay: an amusement park, a landscape of slag heaps, art and outdoor recreation. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bottrop, you can start by considering which of these themes will shape your itinerary. A visit to Movie Park Germany puts the focus elsewhere than time spent on a slag heap, in a sculpture park or by a lake.

Amusement park and other activities

Movie Park Germany is located in the north of Bottrop and covers more than 45 hectares. Its various themed areas feature attractions for visitors of different ages. With 14 attractions, Nickland is specifically aimed at younger children. So, if you’re planning an outing with children, you can distinguish the park’s general offerings from this particular focus.

The live stunt show “Operation Red Carpet” takes place in Studio 6 of the Movie Park Studios. It combines authentic US sets and stunt performances with a film-based storyline. As show details may change, check the current program before your visit.

The Alpincenter Bottrop adds a 640-metre-long indoor ski slope, described as the longest in the world, to the range of options. It also offers a high ropes course and a summer toboggan run. Each of these different activities gives your day out its own focus.

Slag heaps and industrial heritage

The Tetrahedron is a structure around 50 metres high, situated on a former mining spoil heap. Its tip is illuminated at night, making it a landmark visible from far away across Bottrop. You can reach the Tetrahedron at the summit of the approximately 80-metre-high heap on foot, either via a winding path or up a staircase with almost 400 steps.

Another destination on a slag heap is Halde Haniel. There, a Stations of the Cross trail with 15 stations leads to the summit; the cross was erected in 1992. The heap is also home to an amphitheatre at an altitude of 126 metres, with space for 800 visitors, which serves as a venue for cultural events. A visit to the heap and the event venue thus represent different aspects of Bottrop’s cultural and natural offerings.

Art and the city garden

The sculpture park at the Quadrat Museum Centre features permanent exhibitions. Around the Josef Albers Museum, you can discover works by Max Bill, Donald Judd, Norbert Kricke, Hans Steinbrenner, Bernar Venet and other artists. The City Garden is right next to the Quadrat Museum Centre and is a recreational green space within walking distance of the city centre. This makes it possible to explore outdoor art and a green space in one part of the city.

Trails and outdoor recreation

Heidhofsee is one of Bottrop’s recreational areas and has circular walking trails. There are play and sunbathing lawns on the south shore; the lake is accessible via “Zum Heidhof.” In the Kirchheller Heide, trails invite you to hike, cycle and ride horses. These options differ in terms of activity: circular walking trails are the focus at the lake, while the heath offers cycling and horseback riding as well as hiking.
