Bonn between contemporary history, museums and the Rheinaue
Accommodation in Bonn
Bonn offers a charming old town with an extensive pedestrian zone, around 30 museums and numerous sporting and musical events. The city lies directly on the Rhine and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. This means there are various ways to shape your stay: culture and contemporary history, digital topics or time outdoors.
Museums and contemporary history
Bonn’s Museum Mile, with the Museum Koenig, the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Caricature Gallery, the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Deutsches Museum Bonn, is accessible by public transport. The museums offer different starting points for a cultural stay. At the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany, the permanent exhibition shows how Germany has developed into a stable democracy since 1945—in a personal, everyday and interactive way.
The treasure chamber at the Beethoven-Haus Bonn contains original manuscripts. Together with the contemporary-history theme at the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany, this offers a choice of different cultural interests. When planning your visits, you can decide whether you would rather explore contemporary German history or Beethoven and his manuscripts.
Walks and routes by duration
The Path of Democracy is a signposted walking route to sites of contemporary history in Bonn’s former government district. It starts at the House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany and passes twelve of the 18 stops in about 90 to 120 minutes; six stops are a little farther away. The approximate duration gives you a clear time frame for this walk.
Another option is the Museum Route: a circular route about 12 kilometres long, with a journey time of approximately one hour, starting and ending at the Market Square. The two routes therefore differ in both their theme and their stated duration and distance. This lets you decide whether to include a walk focused on contemporary history or the Museum Route in your stay.
Digital topics at the museum
In the “AI: Foundations” experience space, visitors can explore the basics of artificial intelligence and train simple neural networks. The Deutsches Museum Bonn also offers interactive “AI:ckstarts.” These last 30 minutes and provide an accessible introduction to the world of artificial intelligence. As availability may change, check the current options before your visit.
The “Touch Tomorrow Lab” regularly offers guided discovery tours in small groups and insights into the digital world of tomorrow. The schedule may change here too, so check the current tour dates before your visit. The activities have different focuses: the experience space centres on exploring and training simple neural networks, while the AI:ckstarts are designed as a clearly timed, interactive introduction.
The Rheinaue as a large open space
The Rheinaue recreational park covers 160 hectares and lies in the geographical heart of Bonn. A network of almost 45 kilometres of walking paths runs through the park. The Rheinaue therefore offers a different focus from museums and walks: its vast parkland and walking paths define the experience.
The recreational park also includes the 15-hectare Auensee, where six pontoon bridges invite visitors to go boating. The park and lake offer different ways to spend time outdoors. When planning your stay, you can treat cultural attractions and nature-based activities as separate parts of your itinerary rather than combining them into a single walk.
