When looking for a hotel in Stadtlohn, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip. Haus Hakenfort, religious sites and museums provide a cultural and historical setting for your stay; cycling routes along the Berkel and a hiking car park offer different points of interest. These differences can help you choose a stay in Stadtlohn that suits your interests.

Haus Hakenfort and historic architecture

Haus Hakenfort brings together architecture and local history. It is considered Stadtlohn’s oldest surviving town house after the wartime destruction and an outstanding example of early Neoclassical houses in the Münsterland. The building can therefore be viewed in two ways: in terms of its place among the city’s surviving houses and its architectural classification within the Münsterland. The local tourist information office is located in Haus Hakenfort. Before your visit, check whether this service is still offered there.

The Laurentius Chapel stands at Haus Hengelborg. It was built in 1716/1717 as a hunting chapel. This gives the building both a date of origin and an original purpose.

Church history and tradition

St. Otger was founded around 800 by Liudger, the first Bishop of MĂĽnster, and is one of the four original parishes of the Diocese of MĂĽnster. The date and its ecclesiastical classification answer different questions: the date points to its early founding, while its designation as an original parish describes its place within the diocese. At the Hilgenberg Chapel, a different date is of particular significance: its first written mention is dated to 1525. The annual procession to the chapel takes place on July 2 for the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. If you plan your visit around this date, check the current arrangements in advance.

Museums in Stadtlohn

The Kiepenkerl Museum displays selected works from a private collection and introduces Stadtlohn’s Kiepenkerl Sunday tradition, which has been going on for more than 40 years. Check current access arrangements in advance for your museum visit and any guided tours. The WLE Railway Museum is dedicated to the Westfälische Landeseisenbahn and is located in the former railway station building; check current access arrangements here as well. The two museums focus on different subjects: the Kiepenkerl Sunday tradition and the Westfälische Landeseisenbahn.

Cycling routes along the Berkel and a hiking car park

The cycling routes around Stadtlohn are mostly flat and follow the Berkel in the direction of Vreden. Fields, meadows and small streams shape the landscape. The Berkel Route continues through Stadtlohn towards Vreden and into the Netherlands. This gives you two different points of reference: the scenery along the cycling routes and the course of the Berkel Route beyond Stadtlohn. You can decide whether you would rather follow the landscape described or the route itself.

Another point of reference is the hiking car park at Landgutritter in Stadtlohn-BĂĽren. It is opposite a church and next to an animal enclosure and a playground.
