Discover Raesfeld
Accommodation in Raesfeld
Raesfeld combines a historic castle complex with an extensive wildlife park and themed trails. This offers different focuses for planning your trip: architectural history and the townscape, regional stories, or walks through a historically designed landscape. The castle, Schlossfreiheit and wildlife park each offer their own perspective on the area; the trails complement them with specific themes and a designated circular route.
Raesfeld Castle and Schlossfreiheit
Raesfeld Castle is a moated castle whose construction history spans from the 14th to the 17th century. The complex consists of an outer ward and a main castle. At 52.5 metres, its tower is considered the tallest castle tower in Westphalia. Its height and design make the castle complex a striking architectural landmark.
The castle is surrounded by Schlossfreiheit, a small settlement that has preserved its medieval layout. Its townscape includes several listed buildings. Those interested in the area's history can therefore explore not only the moated castle, but also a settlement whose layout dates back to the Middle Ages.
Legends Trail and LandStreifer Circular Route
The Art and Legends Trail offers a different focus: at 13 stops, silhouette cut-outs depict legends from Raesfeld, Erle and Homer. The motifs give the route a clear cultural theme and bring several places in the surrounding area into the stories.
Landscape and history also come together on the LandStreifer circular route “In the Footsteps of Count Alexander II”. The easy loop is 6.3 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half. It starts and ends at car parks in Raesfeld. The route includes the Sterndeuterturm (Astrologer’s Tower): Alexander II von Velen used its balustrade to observe the night sky. As route details may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.
Wildlife Park: Renaissance Grounds and Trails
The wildlife park near Raesfeld Castle covers around 100 hectares and was laid out in the Renaissance style around 1650. A well-developed network of paths offers opportunities for walks. Red deer and fallow deer are present in the park, bringing its original use back into view. Those who want to explore the landscape on foot will find a different focus here than on the historical circular tour.
The Raesfeld Castle wildlife park also contains a 5,000-square-metre nature experience area outdoors for families. Facilities include climbing and balancing trails, a low ropes course, a pinecone throwing area and a space for building with branches. As facilities may change, it is best to check the latest information before your visit.
Other Places to Visit
The Issel spring on Raesfelder Vennekenweg is set up as a visitor stop. It has a natural stone staircase, benches and seating; parking is available nearby. As visitor facilities may change, it is sensible to check the latest information in advance.
The nature park centre lies between the historic castle complex and the Renaissance wildlife park. It serves as a visitor and information centre about Raesfeld, its surroundings and Hohe Mark Nature Park. It thus complements first-hand impressions of the castle and landscape with information about the region's themes.
