Reken offers several highlights for your stay: the observation tower on Melchenberg, a network of Nordic walking routes, the circular trail in Frankenhof Wildlife Park and cultural and historical sites in Groß Reken. You can choose between far-reaching views, routes through several districts, nature experiences and individual historical sites.

Klein Reken

Views and Trails in Reken

The observation tower on Melchenberg is a 60-metre-high steel structure. Its viewing platform is 30 metres above ground and can be reached via 168 steps. On a clear day, the view stretches across the municipality of Reken and Hohe Mark Nature Park, reaching as far as the Ruhr region and Münster. The two height figures refer to different points: the tower’s total height and the height of the platform.

The Nordic Walking Park covers approximately 100 kilometres and comprises 15 routes, some of which are interconnected. They are spread across Groß Reken, Bahnhof Reken, Klein Reken, Maria Veen and Hülsten. The approximate distance refers to the park and its multiple routes, not to a single trail. The districts listed give you a reference point when choosing routes based on their respective starting locations.

Nature at Frankenhof Wildlife Park

At Frankenhof Wildlife Park, a circular trail passes natural-style enclosures, woodland ponds and green meadows. Visitors can observe animals, use the play equipment, learn more about nature and enjoy a picnic on the park grounds. The trail brings together these different experiences along the way; the activities listed range from watching the animals to taking a break in the countryside.

Historic Sites in Groß Reken

The former Catholic parish church of St. Simon and Judas in Groß Reken has largely retained its original character. Haus Uphave also tells the story of the area: the former tenant farm belonging to Schulze-Holthausen farm was built in 1742 and is located on Harrierstraße in Groß Reken. Behind the house, a cottage garden with a biotope and a pleasant place to rest invite you to take a break. The former parish church and the former tenant farm represent two different aspects of the area’s history.

A large Stations of the Cross trail leads from Groß Reken to the forest chapel, a small pilgrimage site, and ends back in Groß Reken. A document dating from 1686 refers to the chapel’s place of worship. It is freely accessible during the day until dusk; seasonal or temporary changes are possible. Therefore, check access before your visit.

The Windmill Local History Museum on Mühlenberg focuses on the theme “From Sowing to Harvesting”. It was established in 1972; many of the tools and machines on display were in use until 1945. The museum is currently closed to visitors due to renovation work.
