Explore Rohren through its hiking trails, historic craftsmanship and views from Perdsley. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these highlights: the village walk leads to sites of local history, while the forest nature trail, sawmill and landscape each offer their own themes. This will help you decide whether you want your stay to focus mainly on a walk, a hike or observing nature.

Local history and sawmill

The village walk in Rohren passes the parish church, a preserved memorial stone dating from 1724 and a replica of a historic draw well. The stops bring together sacred architectural history, remembrance and an object from everyday life in the past. St. Cornelius Church in Rohren was rebuilt from 1864 to 1867 and consecrated on September 24, 1870.

At the historic sawmill in Rohren, tree trunks are cut lengthwise into boards by the rhythmic up-and-down motion of a saw frame. The process shows how boards are made from a tree trunk. Another forest-related attraction is the forest museum at KluckbachhĂĽtte, where more than 200 exhibits on water, forests and wildlife are on display. The sawmill and museum therefore offer different perspectives: one focuses on wood processing, the other on the variety of topics related to forests and nature.

Forest trails, views and wildlife

The Rohren forest nature trail is signposted from the village center. Its stops include a stacked demonstration charcoal kiln and a historic sawmill. This links forest-related themes with traditional craftsmanship, which also features at the sawmill.

The “Perdsley” Eifel viewpoint in Monschau-Rohren is about 400 meters above sea level; from there, views extend towards Monschau and the Rur Valley. Wildlife is also part of the landscape here: many rare and protected animal and plant species have been preserved at Perdsley. Kingfishers and dippers can still be found there.

Hiking or a winter cross-country ski trail

Circular Hiking Trail 57 leads from the hiking car park by the church in Rohren through the Kuckbach Valley and onward to the historic sawmill. Along the way, there are quiet paths, expansive views and short climbs with scenic vistas. Another hike, “Where the Sawmill Thumps,” is 3.8 kilometers long. These details provide concrete points of reference when choosing a hike, without requiring the trails to be combined into a single route.

As a winter option, the 3.2-kilometer Wiesenloipe in Monschau-Rohren is available when snow conditions are suitable. Hiking and cross-country skiing therefore differ both in activity and in requirements: the ski trail requires suitable snow conditions. Check the conditions before your visit if you plan to use this option.

Getting there and finding your way

The “Monschau, Rohren Leykaulstraße” bus stop is near the starting point and is served by route 84. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable separately. Rohren has been part of the Monschau municipal area since January 1, 1972; this is a municipal designation, not a description of an individual hiking trail.

In the wider destination of Monschau

Monschau itself also offers its own cultural attractions. For exploring the old town independently, there is Circular Route 15. The Red House in Monschau was built in 1760 by textile manufacturer Johann Heinrich Scheibler as a residence and business premises. The town’s landmarks also include the half-timbered façades along the Rur and the castle.

At the Monschau glassworks, visitors can watch glassblowers shape vessels or glass figures from a glowing mass. These old-town and glassmaking attractions relate to Monschau as the wider travel destination; the trails, village walk and sawmill described in the previous sections are in Rohren.
