Kalterherberg can be explored in several ways: a circular hike through pastureland, spruce forest and the Perlenbach Valley; cycle routes with named starting points; and distinctive landmarks that tell the story of the village. This gives you the chance to decide whether you would prefer to spend your stay primarily outdoors or learning about architectural and ecclesiastical history.

Hiking in Kalterherberg

The easy, accessible and family-friendly circular hike starting at the Gut Heistert hiking car park is 3.6 kilometres long. It leads through Kalterherberg’s pastures and a spruce forest into the Perlenbach Valley. Along the way, you will find stands of daffodils and a rare intermediate bog. When there is snowfall, the route can be used as a snow hike. The route length and the landscapes described give you specific points to consider when choosing a hike for your stay.

Another option is the Kalterherberg village walk: this easy circular route is 8.5 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Am Eifeldom hiking car park. By comparison, the route from Gut Heistert is the shorter of the two; both are rated easy. Check the route details before setting off, as they may change.

Cycle routes and mountain biking facilities

The Vennbahn Cycle Route is a long-distance cross-border cycle route through Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. In Kalterherberg, you can join it at the old railway station and at Reichenstein Monastery. This means that a long-distance cycle route has two specifically named access points in the village.

The RurUfer Cycle Route runs for around 180 kilometres along the Rur. In Kalterherberg, you can join it at the Fedderbach car park and at Norbertus Chapel. The two cycle routes differ in their stated routes: the Vennbahn Cycle Route passes through three countries, while the RurUfer Cycle Route follows the Rur. If you are planning a cycling trip, you can take these features and the named access points into account when making your choice.

The MTB training centre in Kalterherberg is another dedicated facility for mountain biking. It has a large pump track, a children’s pump track, a skills area and a jump line. These four features show the range of training areas available there.

Eifeldom, monastery and other historical sites

Eifeldom is a landmark of Kalterherberg. The parish church with its twin towers was built in 1898 in the Neo-Romanesque style. Its stated daily opening hours are 10:00 am to 6:00 pm; check the opening hours again before your trip.

Kalterherberg’s sights also include Reichenstein Monastery. It was founded around 1136 as a double monastery of the Premonstratensians. Norbertus Chapel offers another historical point of interest: construction began in 1925, and the chapel was blessed on 6 June 1926 by Vicar General Dr Vogt.

The Cross in the Fens was erected and consecrated in 1890 on the rock of the Richelsley. Along with Eifeldom, Reichenstein Monastery and Norbertus Chapel, it offers another way to discover Kalterherberg through its diverse historic buildings and sites.
