Nesow: History and Routes
Accommodation in Nesow
For a stay in Nesow, its post-war history and several routes through the village provide a specific thematic framework. An information board commemorates a former refugee camp; a cycling loop also passes through the terminal moraine landscape via Dorf Nesow and Nesow, and two hiking trails run through the village. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you decide whether history, cycling, or hiking should be the focus of your stay. Different details can help you find your way: the approximate length of the cycling loop and the stated start and end points of the hiking trails.
History and Remembrance
After the Second World War, up to 4,000 resettlers lived temporarily in the quarantine camp in Nesow, most of them Catholic refugees from northern Bohemia and Silesia. The camp operated from 1946 until the 1970s. An information board in the village commemorates the former camp. The figure gives an idea of the camp’s temporary population, while the dates indicate how long it operated. The people who lived there temporarily and the long period during which the camp existed provide different points of reference for its post-war history. This connects the information board with a specific historical context.
Cycling and Hiking Trails
Cycling Loop Through the Terminal Moraine Landscape
An approximately 26 km loop runs through the terminal moraine landscape via Dorf Nesow and Nesow. The approximate distance gives you an initial idea of the length of the cycling tour and can help with your planning. As a loop, it differs from the hiking trails, which can be identified by their respective start and end points. When weighing up the activities, you can first decide whether a cycling loop or a hiking route between named places better suits your travel plans.
Hiking Trails Through Nesow
The Nuns’ Trail from Rehna to Zarrentin passes Gutshaus Nesow and then continues through the village. The Mönch-Ernestus hiking trail from Ratzeburg to Rehna also runs through Nesow. Both trails pass through the village, but have different start and end points. You can compare them by their respective routes: Rehna–Zarrentin for the Nuns’ Trail and Ratzeburg–Rehna for the Mönch-Ernestus hiking trail. Gutshaus Nesow is an additional specifically named point of reference on the Nuns’ Trail.
Cycling Path Between Rehna and Nesow
There is a cycling path between Rehna and Nesow. On 8 July 2025, the Schwerin Road Construction Authority planned to renovate it. If you plan to use this connection by bike, check the current condition of the path before setting off. These are two distinct cycling options for your plans: the path between the villages and the approximately 26 km loop through the terminal moraine landscape.
Directions to the Former Camp
A field track to the former Nesow camp branches off about 100 metres after crossing the B 104. The crossing is therefore the reference point for the approximate distance to the turn-off. Together with the information board in the village, these directions provide another specific point of reference for remembering the camp. To find your way, keep the sequence in mind: first cross the B 104, then continue for about 100 metres to the turn-off.
