For a stay in Carlow, nature, architectural history and hands-on creative activities offer different points of interest. The “Kuhlrader Moor and Röggeliner See” nature reserve, the village church and the workshop activities at Keramik Mentz each offer a different focus.

Nature Reserve and Access

The 328-hectare “Kuhlrader Moor and Röggeliner See” nature reserve is located in the municipality of Carlow. The landscape includes wetlands and bodies of water, as well as wet grassland, hedgerows, reed beds and small bodies of water. There are no paths through the Kuhlrader Moor, and it cannot be entered.

Village Church: Architecture and History

Carlow Village Church is a neo-Gothic brick building with a ribbed cross vault and transept; its west tower is visible from afar. The chancel dates from around 1260 and was built of granite blocks during the transition from Romanesque to Early Gothic. A ribbed cross vault divides the ceiling with intersecting ribs; a transept runs across the main nave. The vault above the altar area features a suspended keystone, considered unique in the area. The organ was built in 1888 by Friedrich Friese, court organ builder to Schwerin. The church is located at SchulstraĂźe 6. If you would like to visit the interior, please check access arrangements before you travel.

Events at the Church Square

An open-air stage is located in the church square by Carlow Church. Events are held there in cooperation with the Carlow Cultural Association, including “Rock an der Kirche” and “SommerAusKlang.” If you would like to attend one of these events, check the dates before your trip.

Ceramics Activities in Carlow

During open workshop hours, Keramik Mentz in Carlow gives visitors the opportunity to create their own ceramics without booking in advance. Northwest Mecklenburg in a Regional Context

Northwest Mecklenburg encompasses several landscape areas. The “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” lies in the north of the district, while the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” is in the south. The district’s landscape includes terminal moraines, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coasts, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. Gadebusch Castle in Gadebusch adds a distinctive architectural-historical feature to the district: dating from 1573, this Renaissance castle is a rare example of Mecklenburg and North German Brick Renaissance and features reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style.

Also in Northwest Mecklenburg, the “Radegast Valley” landscape conservation area covers about 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch. The area includes the strongly meandering, natural course of the Radegast, as well as adjoining grassland, reed beds, wooded areas and swamp forests.
