Lübstorf: Palace Park, Art and the Outer Lake Schwerin
Accommodation in Lübstorf
Lübstorf lies on the northwestern shore of the Outer Lake Schwerin. The history of the palace and art in Wiligrad meet the lakeshore, woodland and fields, and the natural and aquatic features of Rugensee. If you are looking for a hotel in Lübstorf, this variety can help you decide what to focus on during your trip: culture and the park, an outing by the water, or enjoying nature in the district of Rugensee. The palace and park are in Wiligrad; the small harbour provides another connection to the Outer Lake Schwerin.
Palace history and art in Wiligrad
Wiligrad Palace was built from 1896 to 1898 on the steep shore of Lake Schwerin, commissioned by Duke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg and his wife. The boiler house houses an exhibition on the history of the palace, its builders, the buildings and the listed park. This also draws attention to the architectural ensemble and the park.
The Wiligrad Art Association uses the boiler house near the palace as an exhibition venue. Works by artists from Germany and abroad are shown in the gallery, foyer and palace park. The art association is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Sunday and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Different hours apply on event days; check opening hours before your visit.
The palace itself is closed due to ongoing renovation work. The palace park is open to visitors; because of the work on the palace, check current access arrangements before travelling.
Palace park, steep shore and landscape
Wiligrad Palace Park covers 19 hectares. The landscaped park runs over a steep shore directly down to the shore of Lake Schwerin; the palace site offers a view across the lake. When the landscaped park was laid out, five kilometres of paths were created to lead to specific viewpoints and small architectural features. More than 1,000 rhododendrons were newly planted during the park’s restoration.
The surrounding landscape is also part of Lübstorf’s character: tall forests and fertile, rolling fields define the area. Rugensee is in the Trebbow–Rugensee landscape and nature conservation area. In the district of Rugensee, you can swim in the lake of the same name in warm weather. Lübstorf itself lies on the northwestern shore of the Outer Lake Schwerin—so the swimming spot mentioned is at Rugensee, not the Outer Lake.
Water and other amenities
At Lübstorf’s small harbour, the boathouse complex offers water sports enthusiasts, and anglers in particular, a place to relax on the Outer Lake Schwerin. Trip planning can therefore include different ways to enjoy the water: swimming in Rugensee in warm weather, and water sports—especially fishing—on the Outer Lake.
Wiligrad Palace Nursery includes a garden café, farm shop and arts and crafts. A post dated 2 July 2024 mentions homemade cakes at the garden café. Before your trip, check whether the café is currently open and whether cakes are available.
