Kneese: Nature, Manor House and Fruit Diversity
Accommodation in Kneese
Kneese offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: the natural Schaalsee landscape, a municipal bathing area with a connection to the former border, historic estate buildings, fruit processing and the Schaalsee cycle tour. This makes it possible to explore the town from different perspectives, depending on your interests.
Nature and the Schaalsee
The Arche-Hof Domäne Kneese is located in the natural Schaalsee landscape. The municipal bathing area is also on the Schaalsee: it is situated on the grounds of former border installations. This is where the bathing area and traces of the former border come together. As access conditions may change, it is best to check the arrangements before your visit.
Nearby, the Niendorf-Bernstorfer Binnensee nature reserve protects Lake Bernstorfer, the wooded Werder islands and adjacent natural habitats. Cranes, white-tailed eagles and red kites nest in the protected area. Nesting activity can vary by season, so the time of year is an important consideration if you are interested in birdlife.
Manor house and rural heritage
The architectural character of Kneese includes a former manor house and distinctive barns, granaries and stables, which visitors can view. The different types of buildings draw attention to various aspects of rural architectural heritage: the manor house, storage buildings and stables each represent different forms of use. Access arrangements for individual buildings may change.
The Arche-Hof Domäne Kneese is also dedicated to farming. It keeps traditional pig breeds, including Bunte Bentheimer, Angler Sattelschwein and Wollschwein. The buildings and livestock offer different points of interest for getting to know Kneese through its rural character.
Fruit varieties, processing and courses
The Kernobstmanufaktur Kneese tends an approximately five-hectare meadow orchard. More than 100 apple varieties, as well as plum, pear and quince varieties, are preserved there. The manufactory produces single-variety juices and fruit spirits; visitors can sample and buy them in the farm shop.
If you would like to bring your own fruit, the manufactory accepts visitors’ fruit for processing into juice or spirits. It also offers courses in fruit tree pruning. If you would like to include one of these offerings in your trip plans, it is best to confirm the details with the manufactory before travelling.
Planning the Schaalsee cycle tour
The Schaalsee cycle tour is 44 kilometres long; its stages include Kneese and Dutzow. Sights along the tour include the village of Kneese, the Archehof Domäne Kneese, and the Kneese cider mill and distillery. The tour usually takes five to six hours. Together, the distance and duration provide a concrete framework for planning.
Check route conditions and signage before setting off. This will allow you to compare the stated distance and usual journey time with conditions on your planned travel date.
Northwest Mecklenburg in its wider landscape context
The landscape areas in the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg differ considerably: to the north is the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hill Country with Wismar Bay”, and to the south the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin”. This describes the wider regional context, not Kneese alone.
The district’s landscape is also shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, stretches of steep and flat coastline, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This helps you distinguish Kneese’s specific connection to the Schaalsee from the variety of landscapes across the wider travel destination.
