Zölkow: Landscape and Architectural History
Accommodation in Zölkow
Zölkow can be explored through two themes: its agricultural cultural landscape and historic architectural styles. The municipality combines fields and meadows with small kettle bogs, the course of the Warnow, and larger woodland areas. Wind energy use and traces of earlier development in the districts also shape the area. The architectural history of Kladrum village church provides a specific historical point of reference.
Landscape and Hiking
Agriculture shapes the municipal area. Small kettle bogs are nestled among fields and meadows, supporting diverse flora and fauna. Agricultural land and small-scale natural areas exist side by side. The Warnow winds through the municipality of Zölkow and is bordered by meadows in many places. Larger woodland areas surround fields and meadows and invite you to go hiking. The river, meadows, woodland, and kettle bogs offer different ways to explore the landscape. Hiking enthusiasts can make the woodland their focus; those interested in biodiversity will also find the flora and fauna of the kettle bogs a subject in its own right. Wind energy use also shapes the character of the landscape.
Kladrum Village Church
The fieldstone structure of Kladrum village church was built in the second half of the 13th century. The east gable features a seven-part arcade of pointed-arch brick niches; the square west tower is topped by an onion dome dated to 1698. Fieldstone, brick, and the tower’s roof create distinct architectural accents. Several dates are also recorded for the interior furnishings, most of which date from the 18th century. The wooden baptismal font dates to 1650, and the pulpit altar was built in 1752 by KLINCKMANN of Rostock. The font is therefore older than the pulpit altar, while the furnishings as a whole predominantly reflect the 18th century. Older gravestones in the churchyard add further historical points of interest around the church.
Other Historical Connections
Historic Büdner farmsteads in Zölkow’s districts bear witness to the area’s earlier development. There is also an old forester’s lodge in Zölkow. These buildings extend the story beyond the architectural history of the church and offer further ways to explore local history.
