Villages, natural areas and trails shape the landscape of the municipality of Lewitzrand. Other attractions include the Old Forester’s House in Rusch with its fallow deer enclosure, the Garwitz lock complex, the Old Garwitz Lock Gate and the Eldebad Garwitz. Plan a trip that takes in village history, scenery and waterside destinations.

Hiking and Cycling Trips

From the villages of Lewitzrand, extensive hiking and cycling routes lead into the Lewitz Landscape Protection Area. The municipality recommends several routes for excursions, including the Garwitz-Damm Elde Hiking Trail, the Klinken Culture Trail and the Garwitz Culture Trail. Other possible destinations include the Pingelhof in Alt Damerow, the observation tower at the DĂĽtchow High Bridge, the carp ponds in the Lewitz, and Friedrichsmoor Hunting Lodge and forest.

A cycle route connects all the villages in the municipality and their excursion destinations. The circular hiking trail, also known as the forest trail to the Pingelhof Museum, starts and ends at the waterway rest area in Garwitz. The approximately 10 km route runs from Garwitz via the MĂĽritz-Elde Waterway, Malchow and the Pingelhof, before returning to Garwitz. Its approximate length provides a useful reference for estimating the distance when planning your trip.

Village History and Lock Engineering

A local history room is housed in a historic forester’s house in the district of Rusch. In Klinken, the village church features a medieval rib-vaulted ceiling and restored murals. The villages thus bring together different aspects of history: local history in the forester’s house and sacred architecture in the church.

The Old Garwitz Lock Gate also has a specific story to tell. The upper gate of the old lock was built in 1894; its wooden gate was renewed in 1989. During the extensive reconstruction of the lock in 2000/2001, the wooden gate was dismantled and installed above the lock. It has been preserved there as a technical monument and is open to visitors. Its construction, renovation and later relocation mark distinct stages in the history of this structure.

Nature, Pottery Studios and the Eldebad

Rare and endangered animal and plant species live in the Klinker Plage Nature Reserve. Alongside hiking and cycling trips, this protected area offers a nature-focused option for planning your visit.

In Rusch, near Raduhn, you can browse three pottery studios. The businesses may change over time. You can plan a visit as a possible detour, without assuming that courses or demonstrations are regularly offered.

The Eldebad Garwitz has a large sunbathing lawn, a baby pool, a non-swimmers’ pool and a swimming pool with four 50-metre lanes. Before your trip, check whether the facility will be open during your visit.

The annual Neptune Festival is a tradition at the Eldebad. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the dates and programme in advance. The various pools, sunbathing lawn and festival each give the Eldebad its own place among the municipality’s excursion destinations.
