Wöbbelin: Memorial Sites and Theodor Körner Museum

Wöbbelin is home to memorials to the Wöbbelin concentration camp reception camp and to Theodor Körner. The memorial sites are dedicated to both subjects; in the village, you will also find the Theodor Körner Museum, Körner’s grave and a memorial to the former concentration camp nearby. You can therefore focus your visit on the camp’s history, Körner’s life and work, or both.

Wöbbelin Memorial Sites

The exhibition at the memorial sites is located right in the village of Wöbbelin on federal highway 106, Ludwigsluster Straße, at the turn-off for Neustadt-Glewe. The building that now houses the memorial sites was originally built to honour the patriotic poet Theodor Körner. The exhibitions include “Theodor Körner (1791–1813). Poet and Patriot. His Rise to Idol.” and the documentary exhibition “Ten Weeks at the Wöbbelin Concentration Camp Subcamp.”

On the grounds of the memorial sites, where Theodor Körner was laid to rest, around 160 of the more than 1,000 people who died at the Wöbbelin concentration camp reception camp are buried. The exhibition titles make their different focuses clear: one is dedicated to Körner as a poet and patriot, the other to the concentration camp subcamp.

Theodor Körner and the Cemetery Memorial

The Theodor Körner Museum in Wöbbelin commemorates the poet and freedom fighter and illustrates his life and work in an exhibition. The Körner exhibition at the memorial sites presents him as a patriotic poet; the museum focuses on his life and work.

Theodor Körner’s grave is in the cemetery east of Wöbbelin village church. A memorial to the former Wöbbelin concentration camp nearby also stands there. The exhibition, grave and cemetery memorial are therefore among the different points of interest you can discover when exploring Wöbbelin’s history.

Guided Tours and Getting There

The memorial sites offer guided tours, especially for school groups. By arrangement, tours are also possible outside opening hours. If you are planning such a visit, arrange it in advance. Buses connect the memorial site with Ludwigslust and Neustadt-Glewe; check the current timetable before travelling.

Another memorial site in the surrounding area is located in a forest near Lüblow, directly on the B 106. In the Theodor Körner Park at this memorial site is a sandstone relief created by Jo Jastram. This site is near Lüblow and is therefore an additional regional point of interest, not another exhibition in the village of Wöbbelin.

A Different Historical Focus in Ludwigslust-Parchim

In the wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim, Ludwigslust Palace offers a different historical focus from Wöbbelin’s memorial sites. The palace was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” It is at the heart of an almost completely preserved late Baroque townscape, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace explores art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The wider destination thus offers both Wöbbelin’s places of remembrance and a distinct introduction to courtly history and architecture.
