Accommodation in Toddin
Toddin’s local history can be explored through different traces of the past: from the mention of Oll Burg in 1128 and the history of the von Pentz family to more recent entries in the list of historic monuments. Information about the landscape in a specific planning area offers another perspective on the town. These topics can help you narrow down the focus of your stay when choosing a hotel.
Historic sights in Toddin
The church in Toddin had a history spanning more than 500 years; this initially came to an end with its deconsecration. The Ludwigslust-Parchim district’s list of historic monuments, dated August 2023, includes the former smithy at Dorfstraße 28 and the fieldstone barn at Hillerweg 8. It also lists the residence at Mühlenweg 6 and the residences at Mühlenweg 8/10. The addresses and building types offer different starting points for exploring Toddin’s architectural heritage.
Another historical connection is the half-timbered chapel of the von Pentz family. It was built in 1520 on the commission of Joachim von Pentz and demolished in 1956, presumably because it had fallen into disrepair. Hans von Pentz became a feudal tenant of Toddin in 1432; his family remained connected with the estate until 1670. The chapel’s history and the family’s longer association with the estate offer two different perspectives on the town’s past.
Oll Burg, southwest of Toddin, was mentioned in 1128 as a structure made of wood and earthen ramparts. The described complex included a castle, a residential area and a farmyard. This early date adds another historical layer to the later dates associated with the von Pentz family and the chapel.
Landscape and geographical setting
The July 2007 plan describes the documented planning area in Toddin as directly accessible via the B 321, which runs through the town. Meadows and farmland border its southern and eastern sides. This information relates to the planning area and adds a specific landscape perspective to the history of the buildings and the family.
More to explore in the broader Ludwigslust-Parchim destination
In the broader Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, Ludwigslust Palace offers a different focus on cultural history. It was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace is the centrepiece of an almost entirely preserved late Baroque town layout, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace presents art and courtly life in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Also in the broader Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, Dömitz combines fortress architecture with the history of the town and the Elbe. The citadel is a Renaissance fortress built on the Italian model, with a pentagonal layout, bastions, casemates and a drawbridge. The museum in the fortress covers the history of the fortress and town, the Elbe, harbour and bridges, and Fritz Reuter. There are also temporary and art exhibitions, whose programme may change.
At Zarrentin Abbey in the broader Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, guided tours cover the history of the former Cistercian convent, the nuns’ lives and the building’s architecture. A permanent exhibition about the abbey is located on the ground floor. If you plan to take a guided tour, check the current dates and access arrangements in advance.
Nature is also part of the broader Ludwigslust-Parchim destination: the calcareous fen near Zarrentin is part of the Schaalelauf nature reserve and can be explored from the nature trail. The 2022 edition of the official leaflet also describes an approximately 4 km circular route on the Strangen Peninsula around Kirchensee. It starts at the car park next to Zarrentin Church. The approximate distance and stated starting point give this route a different focus from the historic buildings and exhibitions.
When looking for a hotel, you can first decide what you would like to focus on: Toddin’s own local history, or a cultural or nature-related theme in the broader Ludwigslust-Parchim destination.
