Gelbensande can be explored through several themes: the hunting lodge, local history and architecture, and the network of paths in the municipality. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether your trip will focus more on the lodge’s cultural history and memorial sites, or on walks and cycling tours. The sites differ in their historical significance and in how they bring Gelbensande to life.

The Hunting Lodge and Courtly History

Gelbensande Hunting Lodge was built from 1885 to 1887 as a summer residence for the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg. Court architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel designed the building on commission from Friedrich Franz III and his wife Anastasia Mikhailovna, a granddaughter of Russian Tsar Nicholas I. The lodge was also the childhood home of Cecilie, the last German Crown Princess, and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark. Its architectural history is therefore linked to the stories of two women who later played a special role in the German and Danish royal families.

The location was also part of the design concept: the hunting lodge was deliberately built in a clearing so that the forest and animals would form its backdrop. The tour takes visitors through twelve living rooms with magnificent fireplaces and technical details. The ceremonial floor is operated as a museum and cultural venue. It is also a romantic setting for weddings; if you are planning a ceremony, confirm dates and options in advance.

Remembrance and Local History

Gelbensande Military Hospital Cemetery is located at the hunting lodge, Am Jagdschloss 5. Today, it is a war graves site. The cemetery contains 53 people buried in individual graves and five in collective graves. The grave types and numbers give the site a tangible connection to the remembrance of those who died in the war.

Another memorial site in Gelbensande commemorates five Polish forced labourers who were buried in a mass grave outside the municipal cemetery in Gelbensande in 1945. The FĂĽrstenhaus near the hunting lodge is also connected with the wartime period: on 1 May 1945, it was set up as an auxiliary hospital after around 750 wounded people had been unloaded from two railway trains evacuated from Pomerania. The memorial site and the history of the auxiliary hospital are distinct parts of local history and should not be conflated with the graves at the lodge.

Buildings and Trails in the Municipality

The architectural history also includes the former Grand Ducal Forestry Inspectorate in Gelbensande, built after 1877. Gelbensande Church stands to the west of the village. It was built of brick in 1924; its roof structure and bell tower were fully renovated in 2008. These buildings add further historic architecture to the picture of the hunting lodge, without implying that they share a use or function.

For outdoor activities, the municipality offers a different focus. The adjacent forest areas are linked by a varied network of cycling and hiking trails. Along the B105, the network connects to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, while forest paths link it to the Fischland-DarĂź-Zingst area. Hiking maps displayed throughout the municipality support walks with information along the way. Before setting out, check which maps are currently available; conditions on the trails can also change.
