For a hotel trip to Himbergen, the church, local history and routes in the surrounding area offer a range of points of interest. In the village, the church dating from 1843 and the local history collection in the former water tower represent two different cultural attractions. As you plan your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on architecture and history, routes toward the forest, or the Göhrdelauf as an event.

Church and local history

The church in Himbergen dates from 1843 and has a 34-metre-high tower. It also features a Calvary group from a late Gothic carved altarpiece. The building’s history and the altarpiece group thus offer two different points of cultural and historical interest for travellers interested in ecclesiastical architecture.

A private local history collection is housed in the former water tower in Himbergen. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether the collection is accessible and under what conditions.

Routes to the Göhrde and regional cycle tour

Near Himbergen, the Göhrdelauf (2) fitness trail follows a well-maintained path into the large forest area of the “Göhrde.” As trail conditions can change, check the latest conditions before setting out.

The regional “Wald und mehr” (“Forest and More”) circular cycling route also passes through Himbergen. It is signposted in both directions; the route marker shows a fountain with the number 1. Check the signs on site before relying on them when planning your tour.

The Göhrdelauf as an event

The name Göhrdelauf also refers to an event. It has been held annually since 1986 as a highlight and regularly brings 300 to 400 participants to Himbergen. The name is therefore associated both with a route into the Göhrde and with an event date. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the latest dates and event conditions in advance.

Uelzen as an additional cultural context

The wider Uelzen travel destination offers other distinct cultural attractions. In Uelzen itself, the Gothic St. Mary’s Church was consecrated and elevated to parish church in 1292; its 86-metre-high tower offers a point of comparison with Himbergen’s 34-metre-high church tower. Uelzen’s Hundertwasser railway station was created as a project for Expo 2000 in Hanover and is one of the last works by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. It brings together art, ecology and modernity.

The Ebstorf World Map is housed at Ebstorf Abbey. It was probably created around 1300, covers about 13 m² and is considered the largest known medieval depiction of the world. From 1 April to 31 October, the abbey offers guided tours lasting about 90 minutes, with explanations of the map. Check the latest dates before planning your visit.

Another landscape attraction in the wider Uelzen travel destination is the Ellerndorf juniper heath, between Eimke and Ebstorf in the district of Uelzen. It covers almost 60 hectares and is the largest continuous heathland area in the eastern Lüneburg Heath.
