Visitors considering Jork for a culturally and historically oriented stay can choose from several themes: the “Changing Times in the Altes Land” historic walking tour, the Altes Land Museum, St. Matthias Church and the Altländer Blütenfest. The offerings vary in format—from a walking tour with information panels to a museum and a church building, as well as a recurring festival.

Walking Tours and Museum in Jork

The “Changing Times in the Altes Land” historic walking tour in Jork is about 3.5 kilometres long and presented as a permanent outdoor exhibition. It features 25 information panels, with QR-code explanations available in German and English. The tour therefore combines an approximate route length with information you can explore through the panels and QR codes.

The orchard nature trail runs along Westerminnerweg in Jork and is around 1.5 kilometres long. Its route is therefore considerably shorter than the historic walking tour. Comparing the two routes by their stated lengths reveals a clear difference in scale, while their names already point to different themes.

The Altes Land Museum has presented the history of the Altes Land’s development and technology since 1990. Topics include the development of dyke construction and drainage techniques. Exhibits on shipping and fruit growing complement these themes. The museum is housed in a grand Altländer half-timbered house. Regular special exhibitions and classical concerts take place on the upper floor. Check the current programme before your visit.

St. Matthias Church and the Altländer Blütenfest

The brick-built St. Matthias Church stands on a Wurt, a purpose-built raised mound intended to protect against flooding and storm surges. At 40 metres long and 14 metres wide, it is the largest place of worship in the Altes Land. The organ façade also offers a tangible glimpse of the area’s musical heritage: it bears the mark of Arp Schnitger, and all of its façade pipes have been preserved.

The Altländer Blütenfest has been held in Jork on the first Saturday in May every year since 1981. The Altländer Blossom Queen is crowned at the festival. As the date is important for planning your year, check the current date before your trip.

Getting There and Further Perspectives in the Stade Destination

Jork can be reached from Buxtehude, for example, on buses 2030 or 2040. Check the current timetable before travelling.

The wider Stade destination offers another perspective on the landscape. The Stade district is characterised by expansive marshes along the Elbe, the cultural landscape of the Altes Land, river valleys in the geest uplands and unspoilt raised bogs. These landscapes offer opportunities for local recreation and nature watching.

Maritime themes are also part of the Stade destination. In Wischhafen, the coastal motor vessel MS IRIS-JÖRG is part of the Kehdingen Coastal Shipping Museum; visitors can board the ship in the listed harbour right beside it. At the museum, you can earn the Kehdingen Seaman’s Certificate. Along the Wischhafen Maritime Walk, information signs on maritime topics are displayed at many points. Information boards, as well as a leaflet available at the tourist information office and museum, provide information about the region’s crafts, trade, historic locks and ferries.
