Balje brings together nature watching, coastal scenery and regional history. The municipality is in the district of Stade in Lower Saxony and in the wider Kehdingen region between the Oste and Elbe. Agriculture shapes the area, with arable land, marsh meadows and orchards covering much of it. The Elbe dike also defines the landscape; its sections include the Hörner Außendeich at the mouth of the Oste and the Baljer Außendeich. The wider Kehdingen region also contains marshes and moorland, some of which lie below sea level. The Natureum Niederelbe was established in 1990 as a natural history museum at the mouth of the Oste in Balje and is located on an artificial peninsula in a nature reserve. From a natural history museum with a birdwatching station, it developed into an adventure park with a coastal museum, Coastal Zoo and Elbe Coastal Park.

Migratory birds in spring and autumn

The Natureum park has birdwatching stations. Thousands of migratory birds gather in the surrounding area in spring and autumn. North of the Natureum, near the Balje Lighthouse, there is a protected area where tens of thousands of migratory birds stop to rest in autumn. Autumn is the shared seasonal reference point; migratory birds in the area around the Natureum also gather in spring. The accounts therefore differ both in location and in the numbers given. The Natureum’s exhibitions also explore the landscapes of marsh, moor, geest and tidal flats, as well as global trade, storm surges and coastal protection.

Lighthouses and building history

The history of the lighthouses encompasses two distinct structures. The old Balje Lighthouse was built in 1903 and began operating on 1 February 1904. It is 16 metres tall and offers expansive views over the Elbe estuary. The modern Balje Upper Light began operating in 1980 and is 56.2 metres tall. The dates and heights refer to different lighthouses: the Upper Light was added later and is considerably taller than the old lighthouse.

St. Mary’s Church also reflects a distinct historical period. The brick church was built in 1938 on the site of a medieval church first mentioned in the early 14th century. In Hörne, there is also Op de Horn, an estate with eight buildings and a historic garden, designed in a medieval style. Its history of construction thus spans medieval references through to specific building dates in the 20th century.
