The Wölpinghausen hiking route connects the village with Bad Rehburg, Bergkirchen, and Wiedenbrügge. Along the way, you’ll find historic churches, viewpoints, and trails through changing landscapes. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether culture, sweeping views, or a hike should take center stage.

St. Katharinen Church: History and Views

In Bergkirchen, St. Katharinen Church stands on the Rehburger Berge ridge. Its Romanesque nave was built in the 12th century. The church is one of the medieval churches and among the oldest churches in the Schaumburg-Lippe regional church. One item of its furnishings also bears a precise date: the baptismal font was donated in 1622. From the church, distant views reach as far as Lake Steinhude and the Weser Uplands.

The church thus offers both a historical and a scenic point of interest, though the two are not the same: the Romanesque nave reflects its architectural history, while its location on the ridge opens up distant views. Concerts are held here regularly; the program may change. If you’re interested in the music, check the concert dates for your planned visit.

Bergkirchen is also a pilgrimage stop on a secondary route of the Loccum-Volkenroda Pilgrimage Route. Pilgrims who register in advance can use St. Katharinen Church for quiet contemplation. Registration arrangements may change. A detour on the Wölpinghausen hiking route leads from the Christuskreuz to the church, linking it with one of the local hiking trails.

The Wölpinghausen Hiking Route and Its Views

The hiking route passes through forests, open fields, meadows, and historic settlements. Along the way, it offers sweeping views across the Schaumburg region and Lake Steinhude. Three recommended starting points have information boards: the Millennium Cross in Bergkirchen, the access path to Wilhelm Tower, and the Green Center in Wölpinghausen. Six more destinations are located directly on or near the route. This lets you plan around several named starting points as well as additional destinations along the way.

The path to Wilhelm Tower has a special connection to storytelling: it is part of the Brothers Grimm Fairy-Tale Trail and features the tale of Rapunzel. Wilhelm Tower can only be reached on foot. Walking paths to the tower start from parking areas near Bad Rehburg and from the Wölpinghausen exit off the L 370 toward Münchehagen. Check the access arrangements before setting out if you plan to include the tower in your tour.

More Trails and Viewpoints

The Bergschleife trail crosses the Rehburger Sattel, a gentle rise at the edge of the North German Plain. Another viewpoint is the Bergkirchener Hütte: from there, the view stretches across the Schaumburg region; on a clear day, the panorama extends from Lake Steinhude to Porta Westfalica. Visibility depends on the weather, so the full extent of the views cannot be expected in all conditions.

Another option for planning your trip is the Stork Route. It is around 41 kilometers long, can be cycled in either direction, and heads toward Wölpinghausen and Bergkirchen. Conditions along the route may vary; check them before setting out. Unlike the hiking route, the Stork Route has a stated distance and lets you choose your direction of travel, while the hiking route offers guidance through its three recommended starting points and the landscapes described.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

For a culture-focused stay, you can explore St. Katharinen Church, its architectural history, and its concert program. If you’d rather spend time outdoors, the hiking route, the Bergschleife, and the walking paths to Wilhelm Tower offer different options. Views and trails are not the same thing: the church and the Bergkirchener Hütte offer the described distant views, while the hiking route connects several types of landscape.
