Salzgitter: Find hotels and discover the lake, culture and hiking trails
Accommodation in Salzgitter
Salzgitter offers a range of options for planning your trip: water sports at Salzgitter Lake, regional history at Salder Castle, guided tours of the steelworks and hiking trails in the Salzgitter Hills. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on activities by the water, culture or getting active on trails through green landscapes.
Water sports at Salzgitter Lake
Salzgitter Lake is the water sports hub of southeastern Lower Saxony. Its beach is 1,600 metres long, and the water quality is suitable for swimming. Before your trip, check the local conditions when planning to swim.
The west bank is home to a water-ski cableway with a circuit of around 800 metres. It caters to beginners, enthusiastic amateurs and professionals. As operating rules may change, check them before your visit. The beach and circuit offer different ways to spend time at the lake, with swimming and water skiing each providing a distinct activity.
Salder Castle and the region’s history
Salder Castle was built in 1608 in the Renaissance style. The Municipal Museum at Salder Castle presents the history of the Salzgitter area, from its geological history to the end of the 20th century. The 2,000-square-metre Ice Age Garden illustrates the living conditions of Neanderthals during the last Ice Age. This gives visitors both a broad overview of the area’s history and a close-up look at life during the Ice Age.
In the wider Salzgitter area, Salder Castle also has an Ice Age Garden and a Mill Garden with a windmill that is more than 440 years old. Its cultural programme includes exhibitions, talks, concerts and the Kultursommer festival, featuring many bands. If you would like to include an event in your trip plans, check the relevant dates.
Industrial tours and castle history
Tours of the Salzgitter AG steelworks explain the steelmaking process, from pig iron at the blast furnace to semi-finished and finished products from the rolling mills. Individuals and small groups of up to 15 people can visit the plant through the Salzgitter Tourist Information Office. Check dates, booking conditions and current availability in advance.
Since the time of Henry the Lion, the ruins of Lichtenberg Castle have been regarded as one of the most significant sites of their kind. The rebuilt keep houses a permanent exhibition on the castle’s history and archaeological finds. Visitors can focus either on the history of the site or on the exhibition in the keep.
Hiking in the Salzgitter Hills
The Salzgitter Hills have a 150-kilometre network of hiking trails. The length of the entire network provides a different point of reference from the distances given for individual circular routes: across the wider Salzgitter destination, two geopaths form circular hikes of 6.5 to 8 kilometres. They start at Lichtenberg Castle and Hamberg respectively, and both routes pass through the beech forest in the landscape conservation area.
More nature and hiking destinations in the wider Salzgitter area
The approximately 6.5-kilometre Salzgitter-Bad Geopath runs through the Salzgitter Hills and starts and ends at the Bismarck Tower. Another route description covers signposted hiking trail No. 27, which loops around Lichtenberg Castle Hill and climbs steeply up and down to the castle grounds. The distances and elevation details provide different points of reference for planning your hike.
Heerter Lake is within the city of Salzgitter and is a European nature reserve that provides a refuge for rare species. Among other things, visitors can spot migrating cranes and northern waterbirds there; which birds are present depends on the season. A flat hiking trail leads from the car park in Strauchholz to the lake.
The grounds of Lichtenberg Castle ruins are open to visitors at all times. You will need a key from the association to enter the keep; check the access arrangements before your visit.
