Wiesmoor: Garden Park, Ottermeer and Moorland
Accommodation in Wiesmoor
The different highlights give you practical ideas for planning your itinerary during your stay.
Garden Park, Water Organ and Adventure Golf
The garden park at Blumenhalle & Gartenpark Wiesmoor covers more than five hectares. Every half hour, water fountains dance to a changing selection of music played by the water organ. The garden park also has a Tai Chi area. The grounds therefore feature both the fountains choreographed to music and a dedicated area for Tai Chi.
Another leisure stop is Erlebnisgolf Ostfriesland am Blumenreich, an adventure golf course. It is designed as a distinctive adventure golf course and features handmade East Frisian obstacles. The regional design of the obstacles gives the game a specific connection to East Frisia.
Ottermeer: Circular Trail and Protected Landscape
Ottermeer is a nature reserve covering around 116 hectares and the last remaining raised bog in the central area of Wiesmoor. Rare animal and plant species live there. Visitors who want to explore the area on foot can follow a family-friendly circular trail of about 2.6 kilometres around Ottermeer. The route passes a bathing beach, a children's playground and a large sunbathing area. Facilities and access may change; check the latest information before your visit if needed.
Ottermeer offers two different perspectives: the protected moorland and its flora and fauna, and the circular trail with the waterside stops mentioned above. Which one interests you more can help determine the focus of your stay.
Discover Wiesmoor by Bike
The approximately 24-kilometre “Aphelandra” cycling route leads into the northern part of Wiesmoor and follows canals at several points. The 35-kilometre “Auf dem Weg der Lorenbahn” cycling tour follows the history of Wiesmoor through the moorland. At around 24 kilometres, the Aphelandra is shorter than the 35-kilometre Lorenbahn route; the routes also differ in their respective described courses.
A train ride from the Blumenhalle and back is offered for the Peat and Settlement Museum by prior registration. If you plan to take this ride, check the current registration requirements in advance.
Blossom Festival and Art Workshop
At the Blossom Festival, clubs and residents attach more than one million dahlia blossoms to handmade parade floats. On Sunday, the floats are presented in a large procession before thousands of spectators. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the current event dates; the number of blossoms and the designs may vary.
The Wiesmoor Art Workshop offers changing art exhibitions as well as courses and events. As the programme changes, it is worth checking the current offerings if you are planning a visit.
Getting There and Regional Context
Wiesmoor can be reached by train via the stations in Augustfehn or Leer, and from Augustfehn by the Fehntjer bus. As transport connections may change, check the current services before your trip.
In the wider destination of Aurich, the Fehntjer Tief Nature Conservation Centre is an extracurricular environmental education centre, a meeting place and a public outreach venue. It works to preserve the natural and cultural landscape of Fehntjer Tief. In spring and summer, students and visitors can experience the plants and birdlife of the wet meadows on foot or by bicycle. The nature conservation centre is also home to the listed Gulfhaus, a typical East Frisian farmhouse dating from 1843.
