Zorge combines the Harz landscape with a local history that stretches from the early steam locomotive to an old museum building and distinctive structures. Half-timbered houses, a waterfall by a hiking trail and a viewpoint also offer local points of interest. When planning your trip, you can choose between natural features, local history and local production.

Nature and viewpoints in Zorge

Zorge lies in the heart of the Harz Nature Park, by the River Zorge, and has many well-maintained half-timbered houses. At the edge of the village, a hiking trail leads to the waterfall at Neuer Teich. Above the South Harz community, the “Pferdchen” viewpoint sits at an elevation of about 430 metres. These destinations offer different kinds of outings: a hiking trail leads to the waterfall, while “Pferdchen” is designated as a viewpoint.

Industrial and local history

Zorge’s industrial history includes the manufacture, in 1842, of the first steam locomotive for the state railway of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. It is therefore considered the first locomotive manufactured in Germany. Visitors can see a full-size model and a Normag tractor produced in Zorge. The Zorge Local History Museum offers further insights into the town’s history and features more than 2,500 noteworthy exhibits. The collection includes objects from the everyday life of a mining village, spanning several centuries. This places technological development alongside everyday history: the locomotive represents a specific historical milestone, while the collection offers a glimpse into ways of life across several centuries.

Since 1988, the local history museum has been housed in a building constructed in 1681 by Chief Forestry Commissioner Zacharias Koch. The building served as a forestry office until 1938.

Architecture and local production

The Protestant Church of St. Bartholomew has shaped the townscape since 1853. Above Zorge stands the freestanding yellow bell tower, a protected landmark of the town. It has been part of the Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz Foundation since 1934.

The Hammerschmiede distillery is known for fine spirits. Under the name Hercynian Distilling Co. / Hammerschmiede, it has been producing spirits since 1985. This adds another specific area of production to the town’s history.
