Vollersode: Hiking Trails, Moorland Views and Local History
Accommodation in Vollersode
There are several options for a stay in Vollersode: hiking trails of varying lengths, moorland views and distinctive local sights. On the Findorffpad, you can choose between signposted routes; “Das Heilsmoor” is another circular trail. Other highlights include the church in Wallhöfen, a distinctive sandy heath and a locally known landmark. Before your trip, you can decide whether you would like to focus mainly on hiking, enjoy natural scenery or explore local history.
Hiking: two routes to choose from
The Findorffpad is a circular hiking trail through the varied moraine landscape of Wallhöfen in the municipality of Vollersode. It has two signposted routes: 5 km and 8 km. The different route lengths make the scope of the hike a clear factor when planning your walk. The trail is lined with old oaks and hedgerows; naturally maintained verges provide habitats for cornflowers, skylarks and wild bees.
The Findorffpad leads to the Findorffschanze, a viewpoint overlooking the low-lying moorland. Information panels along the route cover local geology, glacial erratics, history and nature. The information texts are also available in Low German via QR code. Plenty of benches invite you to take a rest.
At around 11.2 km, the circular trail “Das Heilsmoor” in Vollersode is longer than either of the Findorffpad routes. The route lengths therefore offer a direct comparison of tour length; the distance given for Heilsmoor is approximate.
Moorland and views
Ansgari Church in Wallhöfen stands on the edge of the geest and at the edge of the Teufelsmoor. It is located at the Findorfschanze, from where views stretch across the moor towards Grasberg, Worpswede and Bremen. The church was consecrated in June 1966. The altar and resurrection cross were created by Worpswede sculptor Ulrich Konrad.
The nearby Springmoor nature reserve is home to a sandy heath considered unique in the Osterholz district. It adds a distinctive natural feature to the moorland and geest scenery.
Local sights and historical details
Older farmsteads in Wallhöfen retain traditional Walleinfriedungen. In the village of Vollersode, the Sodbrunnen with its attached bucket is a locally known landmark. These local sights offer a different focus from the circular trails: here, the emphasis is on farmsteads and wells rather than trail length or views.
In the wider Osterholz destination
The wider Osterholz destination offers additional cultural and seasonal attractions. In Worpswede, the Kunsthalle permanently displays works by the first generation of Worpswede painters and their successors. From 1895 to 1923, the Barkenhoff was Heinrich Vogeler’s home and workplace. The Museum am Modersohn-Haus displays works by the first generation of Worpswede painters. In the former home of Paula Modersohn-Becker and Otto Modersohn, Paula Modersohn-Becker’s life is brought to life through artworks and photographs. Art and artists’ history thus form a distinct focus within the wider Osterholz destination.
The Moorexpress also runs there in summer on Saturdays and public holidays between Bremen and Stade, through the Teufelsmoor via Worpswede. Check the timetable before planning your trip, as dates may change from year to year.
