Melle brings together very different themes: at the river bifurcation, waterways and environmental education shape the landscape; the planet trail presents our solar system as a scale model; and mills and a historic half-timbered complex offer a glimpse into rural work and craftsmanship.

Waterways and Nature at the River Bifurcation

Near Melle-Gesmold, the Hase splits in two. One branch flows towards the Ems and the North Sea, while the other, the Else, flows via the Weser to the North Sea. The bifurcation is therefore a place to explore two different river courses. Cyclists can reach it directly via the Else-Werre Cycle Route or the Hase-Ems Tour.

At the River Bifurcation Environmental Education Centre, you can book historical tours, nature tours and pond-netting trips. Check availability before your trip. Once a year, the Bifurcation Day takes place there, with activities, guided tours, music and regional offerings; check the date in advance. The Green Classroom invites school groups to learn outdoors. Children can use nets to explore the Hase and Else and examine freshwater shrimp under a magnifying glass; we also recommend checking availability for this activity.

The Melle Planet Trail

The Melle Planet Trail shows the Sun and planets, as well as the distances between their orbits, at a scale of 1:1 billion. The trail therefore covers not only the celestial bodies but also the distances between them. It starts at the “Sun” starting point at the former youth hostel in Grönenberg Park and ends at the observatory of the Natural Science Association on Oldendorfer Berg. These two named endpoints provide clear directions for the route.

Mills and Museum: Changing Rural Work

The Westhoyel Wall Dutch windmill was built in 1870 by the farmer Mölk. Milling and baking days, held by arrangement, bring the journey from grain to bread to life. By prior arrangement, these days take place from April to September on the fourth Sunday of each month, with milling demonstrations, mill tours and baking in the traditional bakehouse. Check the annual programme and arrange your visit in advance.

The Grönegau Museum Melle also showcases rural life and work in the past. A historic half-timbered complex relocated here includes a bakehouse, a smallholding, a granary and a cart shed. There is also a flax-breaking mill, as well as fully equipped shoemaker’s, carpenter’s and blacksmith’s workshops. The various buildings and workshops illustrate different aspects of everyday life and craftsmanship in the past.

Views from Diedrichsburg

The 26-metre-high, crenellated tower of Diedrichsburg has an observation platform offering wide-ranging views. On a clear day, you can see as far as OsnabrĂĽck. Check the current access conditions before visiting.

Whether you want to focus your stay on riverside landscapes and nature activities, the planet trail, or mills and the museum, Melle offers a range of clearly defined highlights. Use these themes to help you choose a hotel for your trip to Melle.
