Brüggen brings together historic buildings and a range of activities. When looking for a hotel in Brüggen, it may help to first decide what you want your stay to focus on: church and mill history, or hiking, cycling or fly fishing? The themes range from dated construction phases and a medieval pilgrimage to a circular hiking trail with a named starting point and a designated fly-fishing stretch. History and activities thus offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Church Construction and Pilgrimage

The present-day Protestant Church of “Maria zu den Sieben Bergen” reveals its construction history in several stages. The stone building was erected in 1505, the nave was extended in 1711, and the tower was completed by 1751, bringing the church to its present form. The nave is the central space of the church; its extension in 1711 was a distinct phase between the building’s construction and the completion of the tower. A different religious story is told by the wooden pilgrimage chapel of S. Mariae ad septem montes, which dates back to the Middle Ages. It developed into a much-visited pilgrimage site, especially on days dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church is notable for its construction phases, while the chapel is associated with the historic pilgrimage tradition.

The Brüggen Mill

The present-day solidly built Brüggen Mill was constructed in 1869. Its mill buildings and mill complex have largely been preserved to this day. A hydropower plant now generates electricity at the Brüggen Mill. For travelers interested in mill history, the preserved buildings and present-day energy generation offer two perspectives from different periods.

Hiking on the Hohe Tafel

The Hohe Tafel / Sieben Berge circular hiking trail starts at the Brüggen hiking car park. In the area around Brüggen, the 19-metre-high Ernst-Binnewies Tower stands on the Hohe Tafel; it is colloquially known as the “Tafelbergturm.” The Hohe Tafel is 395 metres high and is the highest elevation in the Sieben Berge. The 19 metres refers to the tower, while the 395 metres refers to the Hohe Tafel. The trail’s starting point and the height figures answer different questions: Where does the circular trail begin, and how tall are the tower and the elevation?

Cycling and Fly Fishing

The Leine-Heide Cycle Route is presented in Brüggen as a nature and landscape attraction. A stretch from the county road bridge to the Brüggen weir is designated for fly fishing. The cycle route focuses on nature and landscape, while the fly-fishing stretch has two named endpoints. If you are choosing between these activities, each offers a different starting point for your plans.

The church and mill provide historical points of interest; for the hike, the starting point at the hiking car park and the heights of the tower and Hohe Tafel matter. The fly-fishing stretch is defined by the county road bridge and the weir. This makes it possible to shape your stay around culture or activities.
