Visitors looking to combine architectural history, museums and outdoor routes during a stay in Helmstedt will find a variety of reasons to visit. Architecture and University History in Helmstedt

The Juleum Novum was the assembly hall of the former university. This palace-like Renaissance building was constructed from 1592 to 1597. An architecture tour of Helmstedt presents 1,000 years of architectural history, from the Romanesque period to Historicism. This allows visitors to view the Juleum as part of a longer architectural development, rather than limiting their visit to a single building.

The district and university museum in the Juleum houses a model of the city of Helmstedt as it appeared around 1750. Original items from the university period include an astronomical disk, a globe and tableware from the university dining hall. The various objects offer insights into both historic views of the city and the university’s material heritage.

Visitors wishing to climb the Juleum Tower should note the set schedule: The 153-step climb takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on the first Saturday of each month from April to October. St. Marienberg Monastery and Church also have a regular tour time. Free public tours begin at 2:00 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month. Check the dates before your visit.

The treasury, with its medieval ecclesiastical vestments, is located in the former chapter house of St. Marienberg Monastery. The room and the textiles on display add a dedicated focus on monastic history and sacred art to the tours.

The Imperial Cathedral and Musical Instruments in Königslutter

In Königslutter, the Imperial Cathedral is one of the most impressive Romanesque buildings in Lower Saxony. Together with the cloister and the Imperial Linden Tree in the former monastery courtyard, it forms a popular visitor attraction. These buildings and the tree make up a shared focus for a visit; the cathedral is also a landmark of the town’s Romanesque architecture.

Guided tours at the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments explain how the instruments work. Almost all of them are in working order and ready to be demonstrated, so visitors can learn not only about the exhibits but also how they function. The tours are suitable for all ages. The Geopark Information Centre also offers tourist information about the Brunswick Land Geopark, Elm-Lappwald Nature Park and the town of Königslutter.

Archaeology and Discoveries in Schöningen

At the Schöningen Research Museum, visitors can see the Schöningen spears close to where they were found. They were left there about 300,000 years ago and discovered in 1994; excavations are still taking place at the site today. The time between their abandonment and modern discovery is part of the visit, as is the ongoing research at the site.

The Schöningen Discovery Trail runs for 2.5 kilometres from Burgplatz to the research museum. Eight stops with large information panels line the route. Schöningen Castle is another notable cultural attraction in Schöningen: it is considered an important historic monument and a cultural centre of the town. Outdoor Activities and Routes

Lappwaldsee is a popular destination for cyclists, runners and walkers. At the end of Büddenstedter Weg, the city of Helmstedt has provided a public car park for visitors to the lake. Guided hikes and cycling tours using your own bicycle are also available. They explore the history of opencast mining, the development of the lake and its planned use. Check the availability of these tours before travelling.

For pilgrims, the Brunswick Way of St. James is another specific point of interest: It currently runs from Helmstedt to Braunschweig; the stage from Helmstedt to Königslutter is 22 kilometres long. An extension in both directions, from Magdeburg to Höxter, is planned. The planned extension should therefore be distinguished from the route currently described.

Just outside the city of Helmstedt are the Lübbensteine, two megalithic tombs made of nodular quartzite on St. Annenberg. They are considered the most famous archaeological monuments in the Brunswick Land region. Together with the finds and museums in Schöningen, they offer another way to explore archaeology, this time through Stone Age burial sites rather than spears.
