Emmerthal brings together a range of themes for planning a trip: a circular hiking trail and a cycling route, Hämelschenburg Castle, museums, and a documentation and learning site. You can decide whether to focus your stay more on outdoor activities, historic sites and collections, or an exhibition on the history of Nazi propaganda.

Hiking and Cycling in Emmerthal

The ET1 circular hiking trail is 10.33 kilometres long and loops around the Bückeberg in Emmerthal. Both its difficulty and the fitness required are rated as moderate. This means the route has a specified length as well as two ratings. The Emmer cycling route offers a different kind of route: it runs from Emmerthal via Hämelschenburg, Amelgatzen, Welsede, Thal, Löwensen, Bad Pyrmont, Lügde, Schieder and Wöbbel to Steinheim. In Emmerthal, it connects to the Weser Cycle Path. While the ET1 is described as a circular trail, the cycling route passes through several named places before continuing to Steinheim.

Hämelschenburg Castle and Its Collections

Hämelschenburg Castle is a Renaissance complex. It comprises art collections, gardens, farm buildings, a mill and a church, as well as the castle itself. On a guided tour, you can visit the historic rooms with their furniture, paintings and tiled stoves, along with the porcelain, glass and weapon collections. Walks lead through the Minnengarten to the soap-maker in the garden house or to the historic watermill with its painter’s studio. This offers different perspectives on the complex: the tour explores historic interiors and collections, while the walks described take you through the garden to other destinations.

Agricultural History and Historic Buildings in Börry

The Börry Museum of Agricultural Technology and Labour traces 200 years of agricultural history in the Weser Uplands. Exhibits include old craft workshops, such as those of wheelwrights, blacksmiths and shoemakers, as well as large outdoor machinery and a tractor exhibition featuring vehicles dating from 1938 onwards. The museum is housed in a listed complex of buildings comprising a farmhouse, barn, sheepfold, bakehouse and the old church of Niederbörry. The museum year includes special events and numerous themed talks in the parish house’s conference room. If you are planning to attend a talk or event, check the relevant dates separately.

Bückeberg Documentation and Learning Site

Since November 2021, a permanent exhibition spread across the grounds of the Bückeberg Documentation and Learning Site has shown how Nazi propaganda mass events staged media-ready images of a “national community”, fuelled social division and prepared Germans for war. Open guided tours lasting around 90 minutes are held regularly; no registration is required. Check the current dates before your visit. The upper, accessible section of the exhibition includes a short version of the content presented across the grounds, a tactile model and panels in easy language.

A Garden Highlight at Ohrberg Park

Ohrberg Park in Emmerthal is known for the profuse blooms of its rhododendrons and azaleas. It adds a distinctive garden highlight to the trails, exhibitions and historic sites mentioned above. When planning your trip, you can weigh up the different focuses: the ET1 is a designated circular trail, the Emmer cycling route links several of the named places, and the castle and museums each offer a different emphasis on history and collections.
