Seesen: Museum, Steinway Trail and Sehusa Festival
Accommodation in Seesen
Seesen can be explored through a range of themes: the town’s history, routes along the Steinway Trail and through Steinway Park, and the Historic Sehusa Festival. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on historic sites, walks and cycling tours, or a weekend centered on a scheduled event. The options vary in form, from a museum visit to routes through green spaces and a festival program.
Museum and Town History
The Seesen Municipal Museum has been housed in the historic building of the ducal hunting lodge since 1964. The museum’s green spaces, with a pond and remains of the old ramparts, invite you to enjoy a relaxing walk. Remains of medieval ramparts can also be seen behind Sehusa Castle. The museum and castle offer different points of interest: one focuses on a historic building, while the other reveals traces of medieval fortifications.
The Jacobson House is the sociocultural center of the town of Seesen. It includes event spaces and the town library, as well as rooms for arts and crafts, workshops, meetings, and community activities. The house therefore serves both cultural and social purposes; the specific events held there may vary.
The Historic Sehusa Festival
The Historic Sehusa Festival has been celebrated in Seesen every year on the first weekend in September since 1975; it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Musketeers, pikemen, and artillerymen reenact battle scenes from the Thirty Years’ War during the festival. A Renaissance market is also held in the castle park, showcasing medieval crafts and handmade goods.
Various music groups perform medieval-inspired music on several stages throughout the day. Activities for children include puppet theater, axe throwing, storytellers, and historical games. Individual program items may vary. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the exact date and program in advance.
Steinway Trail and Steinway Park
The Steinway Trail is an approximately 18-kilometer cultural and historical hiking trail from Wolfshagen in the Harz to Seesen. Eight information boards shaped like piano keys tell the story of the Steinway family and provide background information on piano making. The trail thus combines a hiking route with a clear cultural and historical theme.
You can collect six stamps along the trail. In Seesen, there are two additional stamp stations for the accompanying booklet: on PoststraĂźe and at the Municipal Museum. Since route details and stamp availability may change, check the latest information before setting out.
A walk through Seesen’s Steinway Park takes you past five ponds. A tree discovery tour shares interesting facts about various tree species; the park is also the starting point for five Volksbank-Arena Harz mountain biking circuits. The options therefore vary by activity: you can focus on a walk by the ponds, learning about tree species, or taking one of the mountain biking circuits.
Mechtshausen and Sehusa Water World
In the Seesen district of Mechtshausen, you can visit the home of Wilhelm Busch’s family, featuring poems and graphics, as well as his grave. Wilhelm Busch spent the last ten years of his life there. The house, his work, and his grave give Mechtshausen a literary history focus.
Sehusa Water World offers a swimming pool, a cone-slide tube ride in the children’s area, and a sauna complex. Since the facilities on offer may change, check the latest information before planning a specific visit.
