Seeburg: Discover nature by the lake and find hotels
Accommodation in Seeburg
At Lake Seeburg, nature watching, water activities and local history come together. The lake shapes the landscape and offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: from wetlands and their birds to stories associated with the lake.
Lake Seeburg: sinkhole lake and wetlands
Lake Seeburg is a naturally formed sinkhole lake that dates back around 10,000 years. The nature reserve includes the lake and the surrounding wetlands. These include swamp forest, wetland shrubs, grassland, reed beds and sedge marshes. The protected landscape therefore consists not only of open water, but also of a variety of wetland habitats.
Along the paths, signs explain aquatic plants and wildlife, as well as nature conservation and renaturalization measures. They connect the lakeside path with information about the landscape: Which plants and animals shape it, and what measures affect its protection and development? For a visit focused on nature watching, the signs provide additional topics to explore along the way.
By the shore and on the water
Seeburg lies on the western shore of the lake, and Bernshausen on the eastern shore. The lakeshore is accessible from both places, where waterbirds can be observed especially close up. The two sides of the lake offer a simple point of reference for anyone wishing to focus on the birds by the water.
A boat trip offers a different perspective on the lake. From May to October, rowboats and pedal boats can be rented locally every day. Check current availability before your visit. The Seeburg Lake Nature Information Center, which has an underwater window onto the lake’s underwater world, is also located at the boat rental. Watching from the shore, taking a boat trip and looking through the window offer different ways to explore the area without needing to visit several destinations.
Cycling and other activities
At Lake Seeburg, you can follow a bike ride with swimming, mini golf or volleyball. Availability of these activities may change, so it is worth checking for current information before making plans.
In the wider Göttingen destination, a family-friendly cycling route runs around Lake Seeburg and Gieboldehausen. It is about 30 kilometers long and follows farm roads and local streets, mostly away from motorized traffic. Its approximate length and route along these types of roads provide practical guidance for planning your ride. Path conditions and signage may change.
Local history and stories
The Legend of Count Isang tells of a castle said to have sunk at the site of today’s lake. It is part of local folklore; the sunken castle belongs to the legend. St. Martin’s Church is also connected with Seeburg’s history: a chapel was first mentioned around 950 at its present location. St. Martin’s is also linked to the past and religious roots of the Eichsfeld community at Lake Seeburg.
For a taste of regional specialties, the Schwalbennest organic farm in Seeburg offers Eichsfeld sausage specialties from organic farming, sold directly by the producer. Check the farm shop’s current availability before your visit.
