Nienhagen: Trails and Village History

When planning a stay in Nienhagen, two themes stand out: hikes with different route features and local village history. Trails and hikes

The Nienhagen barefoot path is 2.5 kilometres long. Its surfaces range from sand, wood and stone paving to mud and spruce cones, as well as moss, gravel and water. This variety is what defines the route: the stated length gives you an idea of its extent, while the different materials give the trail its distinctive character. If you’re looking for a clearly defined hiking activity for your trip, the path offers two concrete points of reference: its length and its changing surfaces.

A hike through the Kaufung Forest also takes in Nienhagen and the barefoot path. The Steinberg Loop starts in Nienhagen at the barefoot path car park and passes the Nienhagen watermill in the Ingelheim Bach valley. The distinction can help you choose a route: on the hike through the Kaufung Forest, Nienhagen and the barefoot path are part of the tour; on the Steinberg Loop, the starting point and mill serve as landmarks. Village history, museum and church

A look at the village’s history leads to its crafts. From the 17th century onwards, Nienhagen developed into the “second most important pottery village in the Lower Saxon part of the Kaufung Forest.” Linen weaving was also an important source of income. Together, pottery and linen weaving show how more than one craft shaped the village’s history; they offer two different starting points for a themed visit.

Nienhagen church draws attention to its interior architecture: inside, there is a ribbed vault, a west gallery and an ambulatory with flat-arched column arcades. These terms describe different features of the space. A ribbed vault is a type of vault with intersecting ribs; a west gallery is located on the western side, while the ambulatory and its arcades form another architectural feature. The Village and Local History Museum in the Gollong House is open every first Sunday of the month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.; admission is free. This monthly opening gives you a specific date to plan around, and there is no admission charge. However, check the opening details again before your trip.
