Wittingen combines local history with exhibitions, brewing culture, and cycling opportunities. Its historical landmarks range from a medieval church ruin to preserved fortifications. Other topics can be explored in museums or on a guided tour of the privately owned Wittingen Brewery. This makes it easy to plan your stay around your own interests.

Historic Traces in Wittingen

At several locations in the old town, the Schusterstiefel (Cobbler’s Boot) trail uses oversized boots to introduce figures from the town’s history. The boots bring historical themes to life in the urban landscape. St. Stephen’s Church offers a different glimpse into the past: in its present form, it is the ruin of a basilica dating to around 1250, restored only enough to make it usable again.

The ramparts also recall the town’s history. They are surviving remnants of the fortifications built after Wittingen was destroyed in 1519. The Rade Landwehr is a historic border fortification preserved over a stretch of around four kilometres. It is one of the best-preserved structures of its kind in Lower Saxony. Together, these sites showcase different forms of built heritage: ecclesiastical architecture, fortifications, and a historic border structure.

Museums and Local History

The Haus der Landschaft in Knesebeck houses a staircase granary dating from 1835. The exhibition focuses on forestry tools, forest-surveying equipment, and peat-harvesting gear. The museum in the village of Lüben features historic household and farming equipment, hunting and fishing, as well as an exhibition titled “From Sowing to Harvest.” Access arrangements at these two museums may change; check visiting options before your visit.

The Junkerhof Wittingen presents a historical exhibition of everyday objects from the Gifhorn region. An exhibition at the Zasenbeck community centre explores the history of a village on the former inner-German border. Visits there are possible by prior arrangement. This distinction is important when planning: while the museum topics mentioned above already shed light on different aspects of everyday life and work, a visit to Zasenbeck requires an advance arrangement.

Brewing History and Guided Tour

The privately owned Wittingen Brewery is located in Wittingen’s town centre, which is more than 1,200 years old. Its brewing rights have been historically documented since 1429. A bookable guided tour combines a walk through the brewhouse with insights into modern beer production and the history of beer. Check the tour’s current availability before your trip. The visit focuses on both the brewery’s historical connections and its present-day beer production.

Cycling and Regional Routes

The Wittingen Tour starts in the old town and follows a cycling route of around 40 kilometres through the countryside around Wittingen. Those interested in longer route options in the region can find 13 themed trails and hiking routes in the SĂĽdheide Gifhorn hiking brochure, some of which are signposted. Check the details of each route before setting out.

The district of Gifhorn has around 700 kilometres of recreational cycling routes. In addition, there are around 550 kilometres of everyday cycling routes, including connecting routes. These figures describe the network at district level; the Wittingen Tour, by contrast, is a single route of around 40 kilometres. This comparison helps distinguish a specific tour from the wider regional selection.

Green Spaces and Sports Marina

Nachtweide and the polishing ponds form a recreational area in town, right next to the town hall. For visitors arriving by boat or motorhome, the Wittingen Sports Marina offers 20 guest berths and 20 motorhome parking spaces. Facilities include a full-service berth area, water and electricity connections, toilets, and showers. Visitor facilities may change, so check the current amenities before travelling.
