Meinersen offers several distinctive themes for a stay: historic buildings, nature along the Oker, a garden and events at the cultural centre. When choosing a hotel, consider whether local history, experiencing nature or a specific event date will be the focus of your trip.

Historic Buildings and House of History

The Traditionsinsel on the Oker consists of historic buildings in a park-like setting with mature trees. The ensemble includes the Okermühle, which was rebuilt in 1874 after a fire.

The building that is now the Künstlerhaus was built as an administrative office in 1765. This brings together two different historical perspectives: the Künstlerhaus focuses on its former administrative function, while the Okermühle tells the story of rebuilding after a fire.

The House of History broadens the focus from individual buildings to the history of the Samtgemeinde Meinersen. It preserves this history for future generations and makes it accessible to everyone today. Visits are possible without prior registration on Mondays from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00.

The Oker, Nature Trail and Village Garden

The fish ladder on the Oker is a fish passage project intended to enable salmon to return to their native waters. The approximately two-kilometre-long Oker Running Waters Nature Experience Trail explores the river ecosystem and invites visitors to play and discover. Both attractions offer different perspectives on the river: the fish ladder represents the planned salmon migration route, while the trail focuses on the river ecosystem itself.

The Meinersen Village Garden by the Künstlerhaus is considered a meeting place, a place to relax and unwind, and a popular excursion destination. It complements the ecological themes along the Oker with a social and recreational focus.

Cultural Centre and Events

The Meinersen Cultural Centre provides space for small and large celebrations as well as events such as trade fairs, meetings, theatre performances and concerts. It has a permanent stage, including a backstage area for artists. If an event is the reason for your stay, check the specific date in advance.

Gifhorn as a Wider Travel Destination

The wider Gifhorn district encompasses heathland, forests, moorland, rivers and lakes. The district is also home to the Drömling, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The International Windmill Museum Gifhorn has 13 full-size mills from around the world. The birdwatching trail runs around Tankumsee; information boards along the route introduce visitors to the birds found at the lake.

Cycling infrastructure is also described at the level of Gifhorn district: the cycling network includes around 700 kilometres of leisure cycling routes, plus around 550 kilometres of everyday routes and connecting paths. Around 400 signposted junctions can be combined to plan individual cycling routes. The Südheide “Cycling” brochure lists 14 signposted cycling tours; GPX tracks and further information can be downloaded via a QR code.
