Sögel combines the history of its palace and distinctive cultural sites with trails through forests and meadows, as well as a range of leisure activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Sögel, you can plan your stay around whether you are most interested in Baroque architecture, local history, outdoor activities, or other things to do.

Clemenswerth Palace and Culture in Sögel

Clemenswerth Hunting Lodge is a star-shaped Baroque ensemble with extensive grounds and is considered unique in Europe. The ensemble includes eight pavilions, one of them a chapel, as well as a stable block and a belvedere. It dates from the 18th century and is exceptionally well preserved. The Romanian Orthodox Church in Sögel offers a very different architectural accent: built entirely of wood, it was the first Romanian Orthodox church in Lower Saxony and is the largest of its kind in Germany. It can accommodate 200 worshippers standing; a short guided tour takes visitors through the church.

The European History Trail runs for about 3,500 metres through Sögel. Its 46 steles are arranged chronologically; the trail starts at the market square near the tourist information office. This makes it easy to combine a walk with a series of historical stops. The Sögel Local Heritage House also offers insights into local history: the complex includes a Heuerhaus, a carriage house, and a stone oven. The park-like Fehnwiese meadow, with its pond, is a pleasant place for a walk.

In the centre of Sögel, the Forum Sögel e. V. history and future workshop brings history to life through interactive exhibits to see, hear, and experience. Guided tours focus on the Second World War and the lives of Sögel’s Jewish residents. You will also learn how events in Germany affected life in the Hümmling region.

Walking Routes and Cycling Tours

The Kurfürsten Loop, just under eight kilometres long, starts at the Baroque Clemenswerth Hunting Lodge and passes through varied woodland and meadow landscapes, including along the Nordradde. For a longer ride, choose the Hümmlinger Megalithic Tour: this very easy cycling route is 55.2 kilometres long, takes 3 hours and 40 minutes, and has a main starting point in Sögel. Comparing the routes can help with planning: the Kurfürsten Loop is considerably shorter, while the Megalithic Tour involves more time on the bike. Check local conditions and signage before setting out. You can rent bicycles and e-bikes from Bike Park Koopmann in Sögel; check availability in advance.

More Activities for Your Stay

The facilities at Sögel Forest Pool, modernised in 2026, include a toddlers’ pool, a non-swimmer pool, and a swimming pool, two diving platforms at heights of 1 and 3 metres, a slide, and a playground. Check the current opening hours before visiting. The Rot-Gold Sögel 1926 e. V. tennis club has seven outdoor courts. Guests can also rent one of the three indoor courts on request and subject to availability.

At Clemenswerth Palace, the “Baroque with All the Senses” programme introduces visitors to Baroque life through scents, Baroque music, and dress-up activities, among other things. A treasure hunt is also offered for adults: at various points around the palace grounds, participants solve puzzles to find a treasure chest containing a hunting trophy. Groups can enjoy horse-drawn covered-wagon rides around Sögel through the wooded Hümmling region, with drinks on board and a sociable picnic in nature. At the Sögel indoor shooting range, guests can use laser rifles in a shooting cinema to shoot at moving or stationary targets on a video screen measuring about 10 by 3.5 metres.

If you are travelling with a dog, there is an approximately 1,500-square-metre off-leash area in the Püttkesberge commercial district, near the A + W Education Centre. The address is Püttkesberge 13, 49751 Sögel; check the local details in advance.
