Discover Salzbergen: Museums, Gardens and Cycling Tours
Accommodation in Salzbergen
Salzbergen appeals to travellers with a range of interests: historic collections, gardens and cycling tours each offer something different. When planning an overnight stay, it is worth deciding first whether culture, a cycling tour or a specific event date will shape your visit.
Museums and History in Salzbergen
The Salzbergen Fire Brigade Museum has been closed since 21 June 2026 due to a move. Vehicles and exhibits are currently being transferred to the new building at Neuekirchener StraĂźe 20; reopening is planned for spring 2027. Check the latest information before your trip if you would like to visit the museum.
The fire brigade museum’s collection covers 800 square metres and includes ladder and fire engines, turntable ladders, high-pressure and portable pumps, breathing apparatus, and small equipment from every era. It illustrates the development of firefighting over the past 300 years. There are also more than 200 helmets from Germany and abroad, ranging from 19th-century brass and leather helmets to Prussian Pickelhaube spiked helmets and modern plastic helmets.
Another versatile exhibition venue is the Salzbergen Exhibition Barn. It is used as a washing-machine, geology and archaeology museum, as well as for special exhibitions. Historic washing machines are on permanent display; fossils and artefacts document the town’s prehistory and early history. The Exhibition Barn is housed in a building almost 300 years old, which was used until 1946 as a Heuerhaus (a farm labourers’ house) on the Mönning farm in Steide. The building brings together the history of technology and the early history of the town.
The manor house at Stovern Manor also tells a long history: the three-winged building has stood since the 13th century on a hill overlooking Salzbergen, at the edge of extensive woodland. If you would like to visit the garden at privately owned Gut Stovern, bear in mind that it is open to visitors once a month. Contact Salzbergen Municipality for dates and registration.
A narrow path winds through the Bible Garden past flower beds, flowers and bushes. Small signs explain the herbs growing there. This makes the garden a destination in its own right for anyone interested in plants and their names.
Cycling Tours and Scenic Views
The “Around Salzbergen” cycling tour starts in Salzbergen and returns to its starting point along a 28.60-kilometre circular route. It is classified as very easy, and the fitness requirement is also rated very easy. The route passes the Steider Keienvenn nature reserve, which covers 42 hectares. Its length and rating give you two concrete points of reference when considering the circular tour for your trip.
Another view of the landscape can be enjoyed from the Ems Cycle Route section in Salzbergen, which offers views of the Emstal conservation area. Many cyclists consider this section one of the most scenic stages. As a separate nature attraction, the Salzbergen Beekeepers’ Friends have set up a bee education trail on Am Emsradweg.
The Salt and Oil Market and Travel Planning
The traditional “Salt and Oil Market” takes place on the third weekend in June. Its programme includes market stalls, entertainment and a Holland Market. If you are travelling for the market, check the dates for your chosen year.
The dates to keep in mind vary: the market takes place on the third weekend in June, monthly dates and registration details for the garden at Gut Stovern should be requested, and the fire brigade museum is scheduled to reopen in spring 2027.
