Hilmarsum Settlement – Rural Character
Accommodation in Hilmarsum Settlement
Hilmarsum Settlement is surrounded by arable and pasture land, giving it a rural, agricultural character. When planning your trip, you can consider the local landscape and the cultural attractions in the wider destination of Emden as separate areas of interest.
Rural Character and Local Facilities
A public playground and a sports area border Hilmarsum to the west. The facilities include an adjacent football pitch and a nearby pond. Individual pieces of play equipment may change; if a particular piece of equipment is important for your visit, check its condition in advance.
Paths and Ferry Services in the Ems Region
In the surrounding Emden villages, the route along the Ems riverbank and paths beside the canal on the Ems side offer opportunities for walking and cycling. The canal connects the villages; direct access to the water is limited. When planning, it is therefore worth considering the route and actual access to the water separately.
The Petkum–Ditzum ferry crosses the Ems and carries passengers, bicycles and cars. Cyclists also use the crossing: the Ems Cycle Route and the cross-border Ems-Dollart Route run via this ferry connection. Services may be adjusted seasonally; check the timetable before travelling.
Culture in the Wider Destination of Emden
In Emden, the Kunsthalle mainly showcases classical modern art and has an affiliated art school. The Dat Otto Huus documents the career of Emden comedian Otto Waalkes. Across two floors, visitors can see photographs and mementos from his life, his films, well-known props from films and tours, as well as awards and prizes. Classical modern art and Otto Waalkes’ career thus represent two distinct themes.
The Emden Bunker Museum is housed in an authentic bunker on Holzsägerstraße. It traces the period from the beginning of National Socialism through the Second World War to Emden’s post-war reconstruction. The museum offers groups informative guided tours in various formats, including outside regular opening hours. Arrangements may change, so please coordinate a group visit with the museum in advance.
The Friesenroute Rad up Pad cycle route passes through twelve municipalities in the district of Aurich and the city of Emden. It connects the Geest, marshland and moorland, and passes many sights along the way.
The Amrumbank museum ship has been moored in Emden’s Ratsdelft, in the heart of the city, since 2 August 1984 and is open to visitors. It is a maritime history museum featuring the oldest intact lightship engine installation. Access may vary seasonally; check current visiting hours before your visit.
The East Frisian State Museum Emden presents an art and cultural history collection considered unique in north-west Germany. Across around 2,600 square metres, visitors can explore art and history. The collection includes the Emden Armoury, with swords, matchlock muskets and armour dating back 400 years; these items reflect the city’s former armaments.
