Cuxhaven offers nature and culture experiences that are easy to distinguish: coastal heathlands and the Wadden Sea are just as much in the spotlight as maritime history, museums and historic buildings. Which aspects you focus on depends on what you would like to discover during your stay.

Wadden Sea and coastal heathlands

In the Cuxhaven area, the coastal heathlands between Duhnen and Berensch meet the Wadden Sea directly. Around 900 hectares of Cuxhaven’s coastal heathlands have been designated a nature reserve since December 2004. This ecosystem provides a habitat for more than 200 plant and animal species that are classified as endangered on the Red Lists of Lower Saxony or Germany. The Wadden Sea near Cuxhaven is part of the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. At low tide, the mudflats provide a habitat for more than 10,000 animal and plant species.

This brings two distinct natural environments into focus: the coastal heathland, with its designated protected area, and the mudflats, with their species diversity. The respective area and species figures refer to these different contexts. If you are particularly interested in landscapes and nature, you can consider both as separate themes when planning your trip.

Culture, museums and architectural history

Ritzebüttel Castle brings together different architectural and usage histories. The late-medieval castle was given a Baroque extension at the front in the 18th century. After extensive restoration, it was opened to the public as a civic castle in 1996 and is now a venue for cultural events, including concerts, readings and exhibitions. As individual programs vary over time, it is worth checking the schedule if you would like to plan an event into your visit.

The Joachim Ringelnatz Museum displays paintings, drawings, volumes of poetry, prose works, photographs, documents and letters relating to Ringelnatz’s life and work. In Cuxhaven, you can therefore explore culture in different ways: through the castle’s architecture and use as an event venue on the one hand, and through works and personal records at the Ringelnatz Museum on the other.

Fort Kugelbake is also part of the city’s architectural history. At Prussia’s initiative, it was built in a prominent location in Cuxhaven between 1869 and 1879. Its pentagonal structure is designed with ramparts and a gorge ditch; the fort is considered Germany’s only surviving naval fortress.

Maritime landmarks and museums

The 29-metre-high, wooden Kugelbake marks where the Elbe ends and the North Sea begins. It also marks the northernmost point in Lower Saxony and is a listed monument. The two-storey Alte Liebe viewing platform is also located on the Elbe. It was built in 1733 as a landing stage and breakwater. Ships depart from there for Neuwerk, Heligoland and the seal banks. Check the current timetables if you would like to include a boat trip in your plans.

Windstärke 10 Museum focuses on a different aspect of maritime life. Its tour lets you experience a fishing trip to Iceland, the cramped conditions aboard a fishing trawler, and the search for shipwrecks and their cargo. The permanent exhibition covers nearly 2,000 square metres, with a large room for special exhibitions as well. The museum is a five-minute walk from Cuxhaven railway station.

Mudflat hiking and water sports

Guided mudflat hikes to the island of Neuwerk start in the Cuxhaven districts of Sahlenburg and Duhnen. Boats departing from Alte Liebe also head towards Neuwerk. These are two different options that you can consider separately when planning your trip. Mudflat hiking times and providers, as well as boat timetables, may vary, so check the relevant schedules in advance.

There is also an official surfing zone at Kugelbake, where kitesurfing is possible when wind conditions are suitable. The wind conditions are an essential part of this activity. Seasonal access rules may vary, so check the current rules before your visit. This way, you can shape your stay in Cuxhaven around nature, maritime history, culture or water sports without confusing these distinct themes.
