Müden: Trails, Watermill and Heath Lake
Accommodation in Müden
If you are looking for a hotel in Müden, your planned activities may play a role in choosing your destination: the town offers trails of varying lengths and focuses, historic buildings and nature at Heath Lake. The walk around the lake is approximately 2.5 kilometres long, while the Müden Heath Loop is 12.5 kilometres long. There is also an audio walk through the town and activities on and around the Örtze.
Trails through heathland, forest and along the water
The Heath Loop starts and ends at the historic watermill. The 12.5-kilometre route takes in Heath Lake, the riverside landscapes of the Örtze and Wietze, Wietzer Berg and the Heidschnuckenweg. St. Lawrence Church and the half-timbered houses in the town centre are also among the stops along the route. The loop thus combines natural and local highlights on a longer trail.
For a shorter walk, there is a route of approximately 2.5 kilometres at Heath Lake, where you can discover the local flora and fauna. The lake has developed into an important habitat for many plants and animals, including dragonflies. Swimming is not permitted in Heath Lake. The routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in whether the walk focuses more on landscapes and observing nature or on several stops in and around Müden.
The River and Forest Adventure Trail starts in Müden and follows forest roads and scenic paths along the Örtze. Interactive signs accompany the route. The audio walk offers a different focus: a stroll through the town brings Müden’s 1,000-year history to life. The two activities combine exercise with different themes—one explores the river and forest landscape, the other the town’s history.
Canoeing on the Örtze: observe seasonal rules
Canoeing on the Örtze is permitted subject to restrictions: every year from 16 May to 14 October, from 09:00 to 18:00, and only downstream from the mill in Müden. Canoes, Canadian canoes and kayaks are permitted. If you are planning a paddling trip, check the water level and current restrictions before setting off. The dates, times, direction and starting point all form part of the rules.
Historic buildings and local history
The historic watermill was built between 1435 and 1438 in the style of a Lower Saxon farmhouse. Following its renovation from 1989 to 1997, the building now houses the Tourist Information Centre, a library, a registry office room and exhibition spaces. There is also an herb garden and an orchard meadow at the mill. The history of the building and its current use make it a distinctive focal point in town, bringing together information, exhibitions and other facilities.
Other buildings add to Müden’s historic character. The old Kösterschule was built in 1606. A building on the Rosien/Kohlmeyer farm in Schulstraße still contains nearly all the original equipment from the old wheelwright’s workshop. The cemetery is home to a 200-year-old staircase granary that was relocated from Schmarbeck to Müden; it also houses an exhibition on Müden’s cultural landscape and church history. These historic sites offer different perspectives on architectural history, traditional crafts, and the development of the landscape and church.
More things to do in Müden
At Müden Wildlife Park, the “Falconer for a Day” experience package includes observing birds of prey at close range, flight training and taking part in a flight demonstration. The experience complements the trails and historical themes with an insight into working with birds of prey. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would rather combine your stay with longer walks, a shorter nature walk, local history or this experience.
