Meissendorf combines seasonal heath blossoms, nature watching and leisure activities at Lake Hüttensee. The heath blossom festival also adds a distinctive touch. Two questions are especially helpful when choosing when to travel and what to do: Would you like to see the heath in bloom, and are you more interested in activities on the water, hiking or culture?

Heathland and Nature Reserve

The Meißendorfer Teiche/Bannetzer Moor nature reserve is located in the Meißendorf district. It contains the largest continuous body of water in the Lüneburg Heath. The Meißendorfer heathland becomes a sea of violet blossoms in August and September; the timing of the bloom can vary slightly from year to year. Birch, juniper and pine trees surround the heathland.

If seeing the blossoms is the main focus of your trip, you can plan around this seasonal period and keep track of how the bloom progresses each year. You can reach the heathland via Kapellenweg; parking is available to the left of the cemetery. This also provides specific directions for visiting this natural attraction.

Leisure Activities at Lake Hüttensee and Birdwatching

Hüttenseepark has a swimming lake with a swimming and play island. Other activities include beach volleyball, mini golf, table tennis, foosball and a Robinson adventure playground. This brings together a range of leisure options: swimming, ball and table games, mini golf and playing at the adventure playground.

The circular walking trail around Lake Hüttensee offers a different perspective. Observation towers along the route provide opportunities to watch white-tailed eagles, ospreys and cranes. While Hüttenseepark focuses on specific games and sports, the trail offers views of the bird species mentioned above. The circular trail returns to its starting point.

At NABU Gut Sunder, a specially designed experience room displays footage of animals. A camera system records them day and night in high image quality and presents the footage for close observation. Here, the focus is on recorded footage, while the observation towers at Lake Hüttensee combine birdwatching with the circular trail.

MeidoSkydive offers skydiving courses and tandem jumps. Spectators are welcome at events. This adds an activity related to skydiving to the range of options.

Heath Blossom Festival and Heath Queen

The Meißendorf Heath Blossom Festival has been celebrated since 1964 and attracts numerous visitors every year. Meißendorf is the only village in the Celle district with a Heath Queen. At the festival, the new Heath Queen is driven in a parade through the decorated village to the coronation site on the banks of the Meiße, where she is ceremonially crowned.

The festival thus combines an annual event with a set ceremonial tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around the heath blossom festival, check the current event dates. Nature watching, leisure activities at Lake Hüttensee and the festival offer different ways to shape your stay.
