Loppersum: Fresenhus, Church and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Loppersum
Historic Traces in Loppersum
Loppersum brings together several distinct historical features: the Fresenhus manor house, the Evangelical Reformed Church and the Fortuna grain mill. The historic centre, a typical terp settlement, and the routes through the village also help visitors find their way. Loppersum lies six kilometres north of Emden on the B 210 towards Aurich and is part of the municipality of Hinte. This gives you specific points of interest to help plan your trip, spanning architectural history, landscape and outdoor activities.
Manor House and Church
The manor house in Loppersum was built in 1859 on the site of Loppersum Castle and named “Fresenhus” after its owner. The well-preserved manor house is privately owned and can therefore only be viewed from the outside. The meadows of the former Schlingergarten surround the Fresenhus villa. The lime avenue in the Fresenhus garden was laid out as a philosophers’ path in the 19th century. The garden’s tea house was also used as a dovecote.
The Evangelical Reformed Church in the Loppersum district dates from the second half of the 19th century and replaced the older Gothic brick building. Its bell tower holds three bells dated 1411, 1743 and 1965. This means the construction date of the current building sits alongside bells from several centuries. Inside are a private gallery belonging to the neighbouring castle lords and grave slabs from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Mill, Settlement Form and Landscape
The “Fortuna” grain mill was built in 1886 and reconstructed using parts of a water-drainage mill from Suurhusen. These components provide a specific link to Suurhusen’s milling history. Loppersum’s historic centre is considered a typical terp settlement. The term describes the settlement form of the village centre, while the manor house, church and mill are individual historic buildings. Loppersum’s parish boundary borders the Binnenmeer Hieve to the east.
Routes Through Loppersum
For outdoor activities, you can choose between two different types of route. The Explorer Trail through Loppersum is a free outdoor smartphone experience that can be used at any time. It consists of a navigable circular route. Check that the service is available before your visit as a precaution. The Nünepad is a hiking trail from Osterhusen via Suurhusen to Loppersum along the Knockster Tief. To plan your route, you can compare the type of trail and the places along it: the Explorer Trail is a navigable circular route, while the Nünepad passes through named places along the Knockster Tief.
Additional Cultural History in the Wider Destination of Hinte
Hinte also has its own historic points of interest. Hinte Water Castle was built in 1438 on the remains of Osterburg Castle and has retained the character of an East Frisian chieftain’s castle to this day. It is inhabited and privately owned, so it can only be viewed from the outside. Check the local viewing arrangements before travelling.
The mill in Hinte is a three-storey gallery Dutch mill dating from 1869. By comparison, the Fortuna in Loppersum is a grain mill built in 1886 and reconstructed using parts of a water-drainage mill from Suurhusen. At the mill in Hinte, the art gallery and Frisian Room can be opened by prior arrangement; mill tours are also available by prior arrangement. Confirm the arrangements before travelling.
