Hage: Cycling and paddling routes, spa park and East Frisian history
Accommodation in Hage
Hage brings together cycling and paddling routes, a lakeside spa park, the spa center, and historic and cultural sites. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can choose your location based on whether outdoor activities, wellness, architectural history or regional collections are important to you.
Cycling and paddling routes
Several cycling routes through Hage and a network of numbered junctions for planning your own tours are planned. The paddling and cycling station is different: a paddling route leads from Hage to Norden-Leybucht or Neßmersiel, and the return journey is by bicycle through woodland and meadows. This offers a choice between individually planned cycling tours and a combined route with paddling on the way there and cycling on the way back. The museum railway runs from Norden via Lütetsburg and Hage to Westerende and Dornum.
Spa park and spa center
The lakeside spa park has a circular path along the shore, running beneath trees, with benches along the way. The park also features an exercise course for active recreation and a bathing area for dogs. Hage Spa Center brings together water fitness, a sauna, massage, physiotherapy and wellness treatments under one roof. The park and spa center therefore offer different options: paths and outdoor exercise on the one hand, and water fitness, treatments and wellness on the other.
Church and mill
St. Ansgari Church is one of East Frisia’s oldest church buildings. The nave dates to around 1220; the west tower was added in 1250. The two parts of the building therefore date from different periods. Hage Mill is a five-storey gallery windmill built in 1871. Together, the church and mill offer insights into different aspects of Hage’s architectural history.
Collections, art and East Frisian culture
The Hage Archive, housed in the Magda-Heyken-Haus, contains historical records, documents and photographs. The building also displays historical objects related to crafts, trade and agriculture, as well as paintings; it also houses a library and a local history collection. Archival materials and objects from different areas of life offer various perspectives on local history.
The Kunsthaus Hage presents works by various artists in changing exhibitions. The Forest & Wildlife Museum provides information about East Frisian woodlands and their inhabitants. The cultural venues thus differ in their focus: local collections, changing art exhibitions or information about nature. East Frisian traditions also include Low German, a tea ceremony and Boßeln.
Lütetsburg Castle Park
Lütetsburg Castle Park is nearby. Covering around 30 hectares, it is considered the largest privately owned English landscape garden in northern Germany. The park was created in the early Romantic style and is one of the few surviving examples of its kind on the European continent. “Early Romantic style” describes the design, while “English landscape garden” refers to the type of garden.
