Green meadows and forests shape the landscape around Hillershausen. Well-marked hiking trails invite you to hike, go horseback riding and relax; the low mountain range climate is also part of the area’s character. There are various starting points for planning a stay: viewpoints, long-distance hiking trails, waterways or wayside crosses with a spiritual theme. The Catholic Church of St. Michael adds local history to these themes.

Hiking and Scenery Around Hillershausen

After about 300 m on hiking trail NS3, you can enjoy an impressive view across the Waldecker Land and toward the Land of a Thousand Mountains. A hiking trail from Hillershausen reaches Nieder-Schleidern and the Sauerland Höhenflug after about 1 km. This long-distance hiking trail is 250 km long and runs from Korbach in the east to Meinerzhagen in the west. The routes have distinctly different destinations: NS3 focuses on the view, while the route from Hillershausen leads to Nieder-Schleidern and the long-distance hiking trail.

The Aarmühle Circular Trail 2, “By the Rushing Waters of the Aar,” passes Aarmühle and follows the Aar to the Aarschröder farmstead. A small path leads uphill to a forest trail on Kleiner Korskopf; the trail ends at the edge of the forest with a panoramic view. The route thus combines the Aar with a section through the forest and a viewpoint. When choosing a route, you can distinguish between the trails by their specific destinations: a viewpoint, a long-distance hiking trail, or a route along the river and uphill to the forest trail.

Nearby leisure attractions include the amusement park in neighboring Medebach, Lake Eder with its castle and enormous dam, and the winter sports areas of Winterberg and Willingen. In addition to local trails, these offer a choice of other leisure destinations with a variety of attractions.

Church and Star Trail

The Catholic Church of St. Michael was built on the edge of Hillershausen between 1935 and 1937 as a replacement building. The “In God’s Footsteps” star trail also runs through Hillershausen and leads to three more wayside crosses. The church and the star trail offer two different cultural and historical points of interest: one focuses on the history of a church building, while the other is a route connecting to more crosses. The name of the star trail and its wayside crosses provide a different focus from the hiking routes, which center on views and scenery.

Korbach: Town and Geological History

The Wolfgang-Bonhage-MUSEUM KORBACH in Korbach explores the world-famous fossils of the Korbach Fissure, the 1,000-year history of the medieval Hanseatic town, and evidence of historic gold mining at Eisenberg. Its topics therefore range from fossils and town history to mining.

Another way to discover Korbach’s history is to walk the “Between the Walls” circular route. The 2.1 km loop runs between the two medieval town walls around the historic old town. At ten stops, visitors can learn interesting facts and curiosities about the town’s history and discover modern aspects of Korbach. The tour starts and ends at the town model at the Wolfgang-Bonhage-MUSEUM KORBACH. Alongside the museum, the route offers its own way to explore the town’s history: it leads through the town and connects the medieval walls with stops covering Korbach’s past and present.
