Willersdorf is located in the Ederbergland holiday region. The Kaltes Wasser stream, which flows through the village, and the hiking views of the Knebelsrod give the destination a scenic character; the Protestant Church adds a distinctive chapter of architectural history. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Willersdorf, these different themes can help guide your choice of destination.

Village Character, Transport and History

The stream called Kaltes Wasser is a tributary of the Nemphe and flows through Willersdorf. County Road 99 between Oberholzhausen and Bottendorf also runs through the village. Public transport is provided by a demand-responsive shared taxi service. If your plans depend on this service, check the latest details before travelling.

The first documented mention of Willersdorf dates to 24 July 1294, when the village was called Wilhartisdorf. The settlement probably originated as early as the beginning of the 9th century as a small forest-clearing settlement amid woodland and hills on the northeasternmost edge of the Burgwald forest. After being resettled in the 16th century, Willersdorf has been continuously inhabited ever since.

Protestant Church and Preserved Details

The Protestant Church is listed as a cultural monument in the State of Hesse’s register of monuments and is considered a landmark of the 600-resident village of Willersdorf. The church, which collapsed in 1975, left behind a profiled, round-arched portal made of red sandstone bearing the date “Anno 1724.” The interior contains the pulpit and organ from the predecessor buildings; the organ was built in 1879. The dates therefore refer to different details: 1724 appears on the portal, while 1879 is the organ’s year of construction.

For those interested in culture, this combination of listed status, portal and furnishings makes the church a tangible point of reference for local history. The preserved sandstone portal and the organ, with its own construction date, represent different chapters in the building’s history. In this way, the church complements Willersdorf’s scenic character with a distinct historical theme.

Hiking to the Knebelsrod

On the hike to the Knebelsrod, views from Willersdorf open up to the Knebelsrod viewing platform. This gives the village a clearly defined connection to hiking, alongside its history. The hike and the church offer different focal points: the landscape views take centre stage here, while the building and local history take centre stage there.

More to Discover in the Wider Destination of Frankenberg (Eder)

The wider destination of Frankenberg (Eder) offers a distinct urban focus. The city’s landmark is its unique half-timbered town hall with ten towers, dating from 1509. Construction of the third town hall began in 1509, and it was intended to resemble a predecessor building that had burned down. On the south, north and west sides, corbels support the central projecting bays; they are considered masterpieces of medieval woodcarving.

The Hexenturm (Witches’ Tower) is also part of Frankenberg’s town fortifications: it was built in the 13th century and is the only one of the original 20 defensive towers still standing. Around 50 steps lead to the platform at the top of the tower. The present-day Liebfrauenkirche was built from 1286 onwards. Its Chapel of St Mary is a late Gothic jewel and can only be accessed from the outside.

Frankenberg (Eder) offers a variety of attractions for other interests. At Frankenberg Wildlife Park, you can see wild boar, deer, sheep and goats up close; admission is free. The Ederberglandbad comprises an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool and is located close to the “Teichgelände” local recreation centre. At the entrance to the Hohenäcker quarry near Frankenberg-Rodenbach, there is an information pavilion and a fossil-hammering area for children. Bring a hammer or similar tool for this activity.

Frankenberg (Eder) is also home to a weekly market and a farmers’ market: the weekly market takes place on Saturdays in the town hall of the Historic Town Hall. The farmers’ market is held every Saturday morning from 8:30 to 12:00 in the Schirn arcade of the ten-towered Historic Town Hall. The Historic Town Hall’s carillon was installed in 1999 and can be heard daily between 11:45 and 15:45. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the times in advance.
