Bergfreiheit brings together fairy-tale motifs, traces of mining and trails through the Kellerwald. In the village, you can learn about mining history through historic buildings and tunnels; the hiking trails also lead through beech forests and to viewpoints overlooking the Urff Valley. Gemstone processing is another part of the local visitor experience.

Snow White’s House and Mining History

In the village center, Snow White’s House presents the fairy tale “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” somewhere between fiction and fact. The small visitor attraction draws on the Grimm fairy tale; several rooms depict the dwarfs’ lives in typical small, single-room houses. Bergfreiheit lies along the German Fairy Tale Route. A well-known fairy-tale motif and the village’s actual history meet here, without one replacing the other.

The village’s history is closely connected to mining. The mining of iron and copper ores in the Urff Valley was first documented in 1552. At the height of mining in the 16th century, Bergfreiheit had 19 smelting works and mining tunnels extending for a total of around 20 kilometers. Visitors can explore a small section of the 450-year-old tunnels at the Bertsch visitor mine, where it has been preserved in its original condition. The visit brings a part of the historic working world directly into focus.

The Museum of the Historic Mining Office is also housed in a building that tells the story of mining: the half-timbered house was built in 1676 and once served as the administrative building for local mining operations. Its former function distinguishes it from the tunnels and smelting works: the museum focuses on the administration of mining, while the visitor mine showcases part of the underground workings.

Hiking Trails, the Urff Valley and Geological Traces

The Bergfreiheit circular hiking trail starts in Bergfreiheit and leads through dense beech forests in the rugged Kellerwald landscape. Along the route, you reach a meadow far above the village, with sweeping views of the eastern Urff Valley and the surrounding mountains. The circular trail thus links the forest with an open viewpoint. Mining Trail 2 offers different features: it is 4.5 kilometers long, starts at the Bergwerk hiking parking lot and follows natural trails through varied landscape shaped by mining relics. Along the way, it passes old tunnel entrances and crosses the Urff twice.

One geological feature is the Bergfreiheit Fold, a quarry about 300 meters from the “Bergwerk” hiking parking lot near Bergfreiheit. Here you can see rock layers that are around 300 million years old and have been folded into waves by tectonic forces. The cultural-historical and ecological trail passes geologically interesting outcrops, the Prussian exclave of Fischbach and the Hüttenteich pond, and runs through woodland and open countryside. The trails therefore highlight both landscape features and traces of human activity.

For cyclists, the 36-kilometer Snow White Cycling Loop runs as far as Bergfreiheit, the old mining village also known as the “Snow White village.” This is the length of the entire loop; Bergfreiheit is one of the places the route reaches. Hiking and cycling therefore offer different ways to explore the village: the hiking trails described here lead through the forest, to tunnel entrances or to a viewpoint, while the cycling loop includes Bergfreiheit as part of a longer route.

Experience Gemstones in the Workshop

At the Lange gemstone-cutting workshop, you can watch the cutters at work and see how a rough stone becomes a finished piece of jewelry. Information about gemstone processing is also available. Materials processed include jasper, hematite, Kellerwald agate and onyx. The Lange family has operated the workshop in Bergfreiheit since 1966. A look inside the workshop complements the mining history with another kind of work involving stone: here, the focus is on the processes and materials that go into making finished jewelry.
