Battenhausen’s village layout

Battenhausen developed around its church. The inner settlement area is densely divided into plots, while large farmsteads lie at the edges. The building stock includes numerous agricultural residential and farm buildings. Many of these buildings date from the late 18th century or later. To understand the village’s appearance, it is worth looking at how the more compact settlement center, the layout of the plots, and the large farmsteads on the outskirts fit together.

Medieval heritage in the wider destination of Haina (Kloster)

The wider destination of Haina (Kloster) lies in Kellerwald Nature Park, between Lake Edersee, Marburg, and Bad Wildungen. The monastery is one of the best-preserved Cistercian monasteries in Germany and also ranks among the country’s most significant medieval monastic complexes in terms of art history. The Cistercian abbey includes an Early Gothic hall church, a cloister, and historic monastic quarters. These architectural features offer several starting points for understanding the complex as a whole.

The monastery’s bronze hare bell was probably cast between 1227 and 1230, during the monastery’s founding period. The birthplace of the painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751–1829) has been preserved by the monastery wall. The Philippstein is also one of Haina’s cultural landmarks. In a side room of the cloister, the Friends of Haina Monastery association presents an annual changing exhibition about the work of the Tischbein dynasty of artists.

Gardens and hiking trails in Haina (Kloster)

In 1789, Friedrich von Stamford began laying out an English landscape garden around the former Haina Monastery. Parts of the garden remain and can be explored on foot. A five-kilometer hiking trail through the Stamford Garden passes several viewpoints and an avenue of trees. The Stamford Garden and the Tischbein Hiking Trail are open year-round; sturdy footwear is recommended for both.

Much of the extensive woodland of the former abbey has been preserved. In 1533, Landgrave Philipp converted it into endowed forest land. This history of the woodland adds a distinct perspective on the landscape of the former abbey to Haina’s architectural and garden history.

The Kellerwaldsteig is a 164-kilometer quality hiking trail through Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park. It connects forests, meadows, and streams with historic castles, villages, Lake Edersee, and Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. In the section through Haina, the trail detours around the new Vitos Clinic building via an orchard meadow and the Old Cemetery. Check the current trail signs before hiking.

The route lengths indicate different scales: five kilometers for the trail through the Stamford Garden and 164 kilometers for the Kellerwaldsteig. The stated distances help you distinguish between a shorter garden walk and a much longer quality hiking trail.

As of September 26, 2026, the Psychiatry Museum in the monastery’s former parlatorium is closed for renovation until further notice. Check the latest status before visiting.
