Views, plants and garden paths

From the Schloßberg in Ulrichstein, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Hessian low mountain ranges. The viewpoint offers a broad perspective on the landscape, contrasting with the individual details you can discover in the Vogelsberg Garden.

The Vogelsberg Garden showcases the flora of the Vogelsberg and botanical rarities in a variety of flower beds. A paved circular path about 800 m long runs through the garden and is easy to navigate with a stroller. Visitors can discover 243 wild plant species there. The garden thus combines close-up views of individual plants with a manageable circular walk.

In the wider Vogelsberg travel region, the Vogelsberg Garden on Ulrichstein’s Schlossberg has been maintained and cultivated since 2001 using traditional farming methods, preserving centuries-old cultural heritage around the castle ruins. The garden therefore also represents a cultural landscape that extends beyond its plants and flower beds.

History and rural culture

The Zollhaus in Ulrichstein was built from basalt in 1464. Its construction date and material give the historic building a clear connection to the town’s history.

The Museum im Vorwerk focuses on rural culture and agriculture in the High Vogelsberg. Its changing exhibitions cover hunting, art, customs, local heritage and life in rural areas. The topics range from cultural forms of expression to everyday life in the countryside; the focus of an exhibition may vary.

Hiking trails and cycling route

The Weitblicktour Ulrichstein leads to viewpoints around Ulrichstein. It is a moderately difficult 11.6-kilometer circular trail through deciduous forests and small-scale agricultural landscapes. A longer option is the also moderately difficult 33-kilometer Ulrichsteiner Panorama Runde: it starts at Lindenplatz in Ulrichstein and runs via Rudingshain to the Hoherodskopf. At 11.6 kilometers, the Weitblicktour is considerably shorter than the Panorama Runde; both are rated as moderately difficult.

There is also a specific route to consider when planning a cycling trip: from Ulrichstein, the Hessian long-distance cycle route R7 runs east for about 1.5 km, parallel to the Hessian long-distance cycle route R4. Check current route conditions before setting off.

The wider region: Vogelsberg

The wider Vogelsberg travel region is home to Europe’s largest volcanic area. The Vogelsberg mountain hay meadows also give the region a distinctive natural feature: they are the largest protected areas of their kind in Hesse. These regional characteristics complement, but do not replace, the specific attractions in Ulrichstein.

Another highlight in the Vogelsberg is the Vulkaneum in Schotten. The interactive museum explains volcanism in an engaging way and features a multimedia exhibition on volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg. At various experiment stations and interactive exhibits, visitors can experience the past firsthand.
