Herbstein combines a historic town center laid out in a ring with volcanic landscapes, a spa park and thermal baths. The town sits on a volcanic cone at an elevation of 450 meters, above the gentle foothills of the Vulkanregion Vogelsberg Nature Park. This gives you several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: half-timbered houses and local history, carnival traditions, walks and hikes, and relaxation around VulkanTherme.

Old Town, Market Square and Carnival

The historic center is surrounded by a town wall with defensive towers that you can walk along. Its circular layout gives the townscape a clear shape; a half-timbered town hall and half-timbered houses add to the ensemble on the market square. Beneath the market square is the vaulted cellar, a noteworthy geological site and, at the same time, the preserved underground remains of a former castle. The castle vault dates back to the 13th century. At the STATT Museum, you can experience impressive artifacts from 750 years of Herbstein’s history, including the market square ensemble and the underground castle vault. If a museum visit is part of your plans, check what is currently on offer in advance.

Herbstein’s Foaselt also offers a distinctive perspective on local cultural history. The carnival tradition dates back to the 17th century; its Springerzug procession is led by the Bajazz. The town wall and market square reveal the town’s architectural history, while the Foaselt adds a traditional carnival custom.

Spa Park and VulkanTherme

The spa park is located right in front of VulkanTherme and offers ample space for walks. Several hiking trails start there, including terrain therapy trails. The park also has a mini-golf course, a Pit-Pat course and a disc golf course. Check before your trip whether these facilities are currently available.

VulkanTherme is supplied with therapeutic water at around 32.6 °C from a depth of more than 1,000 meters. Regular water aerobics sessions are included in the admission price; check the current schedule in advance. The VulkanSauna offers a low-temperature steam bath, a classic Finnish sauna, a bio sauna with fragrance and aromatherapy, and an outdoor log sauna. Check which sauna facilities are currently available before your visit.

Felsentour and Natural Monument

Herbstein’s “Felsentour” special trail is 19.0 kilometers long, rated moderate, and has a stated duration of 5:30 hours. Felsenruhe lies northwest of Herbstein on the southern slope of Kirchwald and forms a rock face up to 8 meters high. It is easily accessible to walkers and hikers; the Herbstein special trail passes right by this natural monument.

The access point for the Felsentour at Herbstein Thermal Baths is served by bus routes VB-48 and 391, as well as Vulkan-Express routes VB-90 and VB-91. Check current connections before setting out. Prior arrangements are required for group visits, outings and children’s birthday parties at the Herbstein Bible Park. Guided group tours are available on request; check the current visiting conditions in advance.

The Vogelsberg as a regional setting

The Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic region. In Schotten, the Vulkaneum explains volcanism in an engaging way; its multimedia exhibition explores volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg. At various experiment stations and interactive exhibits, visitors can experience the past firsthand. This regional perspective complements Herbstein’s own features, from its volcanic cone to its historic center, with another way to explore the subject of volcanism.
