Weißenborn combines nature, hiking, cycling, and local history. If you choose the town as a destination for an overnight stay, you can decide which of these themes to focus on: Kalkberg represents the natural landscape, while the Cultural and Historical Hiking Trail and the railway cycle path offer different activities.

Kalkberg and the Landscape

The “Kalkberg bei Weißenborn” Special Area of Conservation is located on the northern edge of the built-up area. It covers 18.51 hectares and includes a south-facing limestone slope with juniper and orchids. The slope’s aspect, its limestone character, and the plants mentioned define this natural landscape. When planning your trip, you can distinguish this focus on the landscape from the town’s cultural attractions and cycle path.

Guided Hikes and Geocaching

Guided hikes are offered on the Cultural and Historical Hiking Trail. Depending on the booking option, costumed amateur performers appear at eight stops, including a Goose Girl with real geese. If this kind of experience matters to you, check when booking which option is included.

The same hiking trail also has a 4.6-kilometer multi-geocaching route. It takes about two hours and starts at the Brothers Grimm Ancestral House at Lindenstraße 5. You can choose between different ways to explore: a guided hike that may include performers, or a route with a stated distance and approximate duration. Check whether the geocaching activity is currently available before planning your visit.

Cycling and Local History

The Rotkäppchenland Railway Cycle Path runs through Weißenborn and follows the route of the former Knüllwaldbahn railway. With a maximum gradient of 2.8 percent, it is easy to ride and is also suitable for family outings. The Brothers Grimm Ancestral House is also in Weißenborn. A bronze plaque recalls the original appearance of the former half-timbered house.

The church is also part of the town’s history: its oldest sections are Romanesque, and it was remodeled in the Baroque period. The ancestral house and the church represent different historical themes—the memory of a former half-timbered house and the building phases of a church. Together with the former railway line, they offer a distinctive perspective on Weißenborn’s cultural history.

More to Explore in the Wider Destination of Ottrau

The following landscape and cultural attractions relate to the wider destination of Ottrau. The nearly ten-kilometer “Historic Boundaries” route introduces visitors to historic boundary stones, some of which date back to at least the 16th century. The route passes four springs in the district of Immichenhain and skirts the “Immichenhainer Teiche” nature reserve. Originally comprising seven small lakes, the reserve covers about 23.2 hectares and has been protected since 1985. Since 2008, it has also been designated as a Special Area of Conservation under the same name and covering the same area.

From the “Immichenhain-Blick” bench, you can look out over the village of Immichenhain, the chapel of its former monastery, and the buildings of today’s state-owned estate. The Bodenbach valley opens out there toward Schrecksbach. The former monastery church in Immichenhain contains preserved wall paintings from the first half of the 14th century. Large 17th-century epitaphs tell part of the family history of the Lords of Diede; the church itself was built in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 13th century. Ottrau lies in a low mountain landscape. These distinct regional attractions add to the picture of Weißenborn without replacing its own natural and local features.
