In Schönstein, the castle ruins provide a historical highlight. When planning your trip, this local attraction can be distinguished from the hiking and cycling opportunities in the wider destination of Gilserberg.

Schönstein Castle and its history

Schönstein Castle is a late medieval castle foundation whose origins are attributed to the Counts of Ziegenhain. The castle was probably built between 1341 and 1350. Several metres of wall remains have survived; an information board explains historical details. This brings together a cautiously estimated construction period, the attribution to the Counts of Ziegenhain, and the wall remains that survive today. Schönstein Castle ruins are considered a highlight and excursion destination in the wider destination of Gilserberg.

Hiking and cycling in the wider destination of Gilserberg

The municipality of Gilserberg is part of both Rotkäppchenland and Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park. The Gilserberg area offers opportunities for hiking and cycling along and within the Jeust and Kellerwald ranges of hills. The following trails and landscape features relate to Gilserberg as a wider destination and complement the focus on Schönstein with additional excursion destinations.

Schönau Geo Trail

The Schönau Geo Trail leads to rock remains exposed by erosion that once belonged to Africa. It begins at the car park in front of the community centre in Gilserberg-Schönau. The first stop explores the “journey” of the continents that formed what is now Europe. In this way, the trail connects the exposed rocks with an explanation of how today’s continent was formed. Check local conditions before setting out.

Winterscheid Muschelkalk Trail

The Winterscheid Muschelkalk Trail is a circular route about five kilometres long; its starting point is at the community centre in Winterscheid. In places, the trail passes through the 43-hectare “Kalkkuppen bei Winterscheid” nature reserve. Particularly rare limestone grasslands and orchid-beech forests are protected there. The cultural monument “Trichterkalkofen” and former limestone quarries are also located along the trail.

The information boards along the Muschelkalk Trail cover the Middle Triassic period, which dates from 244 to 235 million years ago, fossil organisms, historical limestone mining, and plant and animal species found today that depend on Muschelkalk. The trail’s subject matter thus encompasses both the formation of the geological feature and its former use and present-day habitats.

More hiking trails in Gilserberg

A hike on the Hochlandsteig can begin in any of the municipality of Gilserberg’s districts. The Sachsenhausen Panorama Circular Trail runs mostly above the settlement of Sachsenhausen, which lies in the valley. The two trail descriptions offer different reference points: the Hochlandsteig can be started from a wide range of locations, while the Panorama Circular Trail is defined by its position above the settlement.

Connection to Schwalmstadt

A report from August 2022 lists a connection from the Gilserberg-Schönstein stop to Schwalmstadt that takes 14 minutes with no changes. As this information comes from that report, check current connections and times before travelling.
