Discover Hausen: Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Hausen
If you are considering Hausen as a travel destination, you can plan your trip around its varied hiking trails, local history and annual village festival. Specific route lengths and walking times are available for hikes, while the bell tower, Lindenstein and Hausenmühle each have their own stories. This lets you decide whether a circular hike, the Mill Cycle Route or an insight into local history should be the main focus of your visit.
Hiking for Different Lengths of Time
The Hausen Circular Hiking Trail is about 7.2 kilometres long. The walking time is approximately two and a half to three hours. The route passes Hausenmühle, goes through the Elsbach Valley and continues to the Hausen springs. It also passes an oak tree believed to be more than 300 years old. The circular hiking trail is signposted.
The “Hutewaldweg” Fable Trail is a moderately difficult circular route. It covers 11.40 kilometres and takes 3 hours and 46 minutes. The woodland pasture between Hausen and Rengshausen has been a nature reserve since 1967 and can be explored on foot.
Comparing the two circular routes, the difference in time required is just as notable as the difference in distance: the Hausen Circular Hiking Trail is shorter and has a shorter stated walking time; the Hutewaldweg is the longer route and is rated moderately difficult. This lets you choose a trail based on how much time you want to spend hiking.
For orientation in the area, the Freilichtbühne Rengshausen hiking car park is near Hausen. Access is via the L3254 between Hausen and Rengshausen.
The Mill Cycle Route and Local History
The Mill Cycle Route is a 22-kilometre hiking and cycling trail. It follows the Beise stream through Hausen to Malsfeld-Beiseförth, where the Beise flows into the Fulda. Unlike the two circular routes, this trail continues through Hausen to a named destination outside the village. You can therefore distinguish the Mill Cycle Route from the shorter circular hikes by its length and its course along the Beise. There is also an adventure and activity area in Hausen along the Mill Cycle Route.
The history of Hausenmühle in Hausen can be traced back to around 1400. The Hausen Circular Hiking Trail also passes by the mill. The oldest bell in the parish hangs in the bell tower, built in 1953. It was cast by Constantin Ulrich of Bad Hersfeld in 1710; the bell originally came from Nenterode. The dates refer to different things: 1710 to the casting of the bell, and 1953 to the construction of the tower. According to tradition, today’s Lindenstein is the altar stone from the former village church. The mill, bell and stone reflect different periods and forms of local history.
The Village Festival and Planning Your Visit
The village festival in Hausen takes place once a year in the village square beneath the lime tree. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the event date in advance. Along with hiking and local history, this recurring event offers another point of reference for planning your visit.
